Hello all!

As you may or may not know, I have a sow who lives on her own, and has done since she's been in my care (around 3 years now.) - Her age is believed to be around 3-4 years old because when she came here she was quite small, but her exact age is unknown as she was a rescue (rescued personally by me from terrible circumstances.)

She's always been a healthy pig otherwise, but I have noticed that she's not very active at all. We took her to the vet the other week to get her eye checked out as she poked herself with hay and needed drops - her eye is very almost back to normal now so I don't believe it's that which is causing the problem.

Every time I go in the guinea pig shed she's sat in her corner litter tray. She does come out to eat and drink and is passing her wee's/poo's just fine - i'm not sure if this is just her being lazy or she's quite bored/depressed?

We have tried to pair her up numerous times but she just will not accept other sows, she's quite boisterous and aggressive towards them. I have considered attempting a neutered male for her but I honestly am not ready for anymore guinea pigs.

In her hutch currently, is her hidey house, litter tray, a cardboard tunnel, 2 wooden chews and a toilet roll tube - she doesn't pay attention to her chew toys. Tomorrow is clean out day so I will be switching around her furniture and putting her some new toys in to see if that helps.

We will be booking her into the vets when we can, just to get her looked at and make sure everything is ok. I just feel guilty incase she's depressed as she really hasn't had the best of lives and I want to make sure I make the rest of her life as good as possible!

In the summer she gets to come out in her run for a large amount of the day and even free ranges - so summer can't come quick enough for us!

Does anyone have any tips?

Thank you.

It sounds to me like she is lonely. Why not let her live indoors so at least she can see and hear you?

Have you tried teddy bears? I know another owner she gave her gorgeous boy a mirror and that cheers him up...

She can't come inside - There is no room and there is no way my parents would tolerate the smell. If she was that lonely then why won't she accept other pigs? Hmm. And no I havn't tried a teddy, I shall do though!

I know the feeling all five of mine live outside in a Shed, OH refuses as because of the apparent 'smell'.
Try a teddy or mirror so she can look at herself. It would be less stressful for her if you take her piggie dating so she can choose a friend, all piggies have different personalities and like humans personalities can clash. You never know a neutered boar might end up being her best friend.

Good luck! my boy Rupert has been neutered to go with my girls, he has had to live on his own for 6 weeks as a result and I bought him a teddy and he loves it and drags it about!

I have two adult sows that won't accept each other, one is part of a duo soon to become a quartet and other ids already in a quartet. They both accepted babies but wouldn't tolerate older ones.Might be worth a try.Maybe they are Less of a threat
