Last spring as some of you may remember I gave a home to two elderly girls Stella and Guiness. When I got them they were a bit grubby, with terrible claws and Guiness was a little bit scabby but had full fur on her belly. They were bathed and treated for mites.

I seem to have been trying to sort out Guiness ever since. She gets sore skin on her belly and chews out all her belly fur and under her legs if left. She's been treated for mites with spot on several time and by two injections as well. But the only thing that works is bathing her with gorgeous guineas neem and manuka shampoo weekly.

Last vets visit to have her retreated I saw the very experienced vet and he said that he thought it was an allergy rather than mites. He gave her a steroid injection and said if it cleared for two weeks and came back that was it. This is what happened.

I assumed it was her bedding - all my animals are on chopped cardboard which seems very unlikely to cause a problem and I have used for a long time as its the only bedding I am not allergic to. We tried shavings initially as despite never using them this was what she was on before. Currently they are on megazorb with no luck. I'm loathe to use fleece as they both tend to pee and sit in it and so it gets very soggy, very quickly.

Poor old Guiness hates being bathed and she's pushing 6 now so we both hate it - I'm a bit worried that she may catch a chill in the winter.

Anyone else had this problem - any suggestions? Gonna take her back to the vets later this week.

Paula

P.S Stella is still going strong despite her tumour (I suspect it's benign after all this time as its growing very slowly) and mild heart failure. The furusmide and occasional course of baytril keep her lungs clear and she can eat for England.

The place that is affected - tummy and legs - tends to suggest something she's been lying in/on. So I can understand you thinking it's the bedding. I know in humans you can be contact allergic to washing liquids, so is there anything she lies on that is being washed? A bed, a plonk, a hammock? Could you try changing a washing liquid to a non allergenic one, or just straight soap that you get for delicates?

Can you ask the vet if she could have antihistamines? Or could you use an antihistamine cream on her? I have no idea about this personally.

My last suggestion is simply a flannel wash rather than a full bath. I had a cancer ridden elderly piggy that couldn't clean herself so needed regular bottom washes. We turned it into minimally invasive flannel washes and then relaxing cuddle sessions on a towel wrapped hot water bottle while she dried out thoroughly. To be honest, she loved being all warmed through and usually ended up asleep!

Best of luck. I love the older piggies, they have so much personality and are so much fun to love!

Thanks for the suggestions. I don't think her food is the issue - she was changed over to burgess pellets when I got her, but the belly chewing doesn't seem to go with a food problem. They don't have any washed bedding - they used to have fleece beds but they got wet almost instantly. Potentially it could be the hay, but that wouldn't really be fixable as good quality meadow hay makes up the bulk of their diets. Frustrating really.

Just thought I'd update this. I've been using Kwench lotion from gorgeous guineas and it has really helped. I just rub it in every few days and the fur has refrain on her belly now. She's still chewing her back legs a little, but it is hugely better and so much less stressful than bathing her.

Good news that your girl is getting some relief. I've been using GG kwench lotion on a piggy with fungal on her face and am really impressed with the results. It's much more comfortable for her than heavier creams/ gels as well. :)

If the Neem shampoo works, would a Neem melt have a longer effect? I have no idea by the way, it was just a thought

Glad the Kwench is working. It seems to be great stuff. I used it on Boris' ears and it cleared up the dryness in days

I was using both melt and a shampoo and it was only really giving a few days relief. But this is much better. You really don't want to be bathing a 6 year old guinea pig if you can avoid it.
