Hello,

Today I picked up a lone male guinea pig who is quite young (around 14 weeks) and I am hoping to eventually pair him up with another guinea pig of mine who is now alone due to the death of her sister (once he is neutered of course).

He is a long hair guinea pig and in the past I have only kept smooth coats and rex's. I have been looking up different varieties and would say he is a Texel or Texel cross - he has a very thick, dense coat with waves in it.

Anyway, he appears very healthy except one of his ears looks very dry and I think it is uncomfortable. There is also some fur loss around the area. When I touch it, he shakes his head and it obviously annoys him, when I did this with his other ear I got no reaction so I can tell something is wrong.

I have looked a the ears carefully and there is no sign of ear mites. So far I have just cleaned the ear with plain water. I wanted to ask what would be the best form of action? Are there any specific shampoo's or creams I should get, or do you think he needs to see a vet? He is a very happy, healthy guinea pig overall and apart from this ear there are no other problems.

Also there is a lot of wood shavings etc in his coat which will be really hard to get out, so I think he's gonna need a bath and some brushing!

Any help appreciated :)

Chrissie is expert at skin conditions and her creams ,lotions and shampoos work very well. They do not contain any chemicals.

If you have a look at her website she has good advise on how to diferentiate between fungal and mite problems.

You mention hair loss near the ear,if you mean a bald patch behind the ear, this is normal. The bald patch aids hearing, hair would impede it.

Thanks for the reply maryh!

I am on the website now and will definitely see if they can help.

It's a round area of fur loss underneath the ear, it doesn't look normal to me and none of my other piggies have had it so I think it may have something to do with whatever this problem is :-\

Thanks for your help!

Good advice from Mary, gorgeous guineas is the way to go. Good luck and any pics of the little sweetie? ;D

Hi Jade,

I will get some pics up soon, I don't want to keep pestering him too much as he seems quite nervous at the moment (only bought him back today actually!).
