HISTORY: Tallulah is a 3 year old diabetic spayed sow. Just abit of background from lately, she went on a 12 day course of Septrim for a UTI, and she seems to get them persistantly - probably down to her diabeties (insulin never made a difference which is very strange as its thought she is type 1 (if she wasnt, insulin would have killed her at the rate she was having it) but managing with diet control, but its not perfect and the slightest thing can put her out of wack - I do my very best.).

She is better after the trial of Septrim, as she doesnt seem in pain whilst peeing and the brown urine has gone back to normal BUT I am hoping to get her thouroughly checked out in January when money allows as I want to rule out bladder stones and just make sure everything is functioning okay.

ISSUE: She has dry skin accumilated on her nose. They are regularry checked and picked up so can just imagine its been coming on very gradually and today has become noticeable. In winter months she tends to get dandruff skin which has been manageable via baths in GG shampoos and conditioner for fungal issues. She has been very slightly more itchy and touchy but her skin looks clear compared to previous times, and it is not to any extent that she is throwing fits or near that stage IMO.

Here are random areas of her just so you can see she seems fine everywhere else...

Hi Charly, this is something I have come across in a few pigs. This thread should help you:

http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=46137

I will see if I can upload a photo of one of my girls who had it most prominantly. If the thoughts are that it is fungal, then application of an anti-fungal cream should help - Daktarin Cream, Daktarin Gold ointment, or Canesten 1%.

Hi just looked at the picture of the bladness behind your piggys ears. Both of mine have that and have always had that. I thought it was normal? am i wrong?

Baldness behind the ears is perfectly normal, some have larger bald places than others. It's just a good place to check for any skin problems as any flaky skin shows up behind/in the ears very well.

(You could try fondling and very very gently pulling at your piggie's ears. This way you'll get to know the feel of them and any changes in the skin will become obvious to you straight away. They are an important grooming place for a piggie as 'mum' would do just that. This sets you up as 'mum' at cuddle time and is familiar and comforting to them. Some piggies adore being kissed behind the ears too - same sort of thing I guess.)

Is daktarin gold better than daktarin? how long does it take to clear it up and is there anything that can be used with it for a fungal piggy?

the nose is fungal nose stripe, or teddy bear nose its can be called, it is a fungal BUT it doesnt need treatment but it can if you want to, its localised and is not catching to other guineas, all the guineas ive seen in rescue and my own including have never had any problems nor as it got worse left untreated, some guineas have it some dont and some just develop it, its nothing to worry about..

regarding the bald patches behind the ears, this is normal in all guineas they also have bald patches on the front legs (wrists) this is also normal too x

Thanks everyone. I will get some cream for it just incase, is it okay to put on the nose as its not going to cause harm if it somehow ends up up her nose or mouth (wouldnt put it past a pig).
