Hi all,

It's been a long time since I've posted anything on here, what with the loss of both Biscuit and Caramel over the past 18 months and with my new job etc.. Anyway, I wondered if anyone else has ever noticed this and could advise. Crumpet, one of our 3-year old sows, has recently recovered from a bout of URI and a spot of gut hypomotility as a reaction to one of the antibiotics she had. She is fine now, eating normally and very happy in herself. She's back up to her old weight of around 1kg and her general health seems fine.

Her diet consists of timothy hay, one meal of fresh veg (small amount of cucumber usually but sometimes other things instead but not often) and one vitamin c tablet (the new oxbow one) every day.

It seems odd but she's still a little bony around the hips but has a large, low-hanging but soft belly. What do you all think? I was going to take her in to see her vet this week but she's had such a bad reaction to her meds of late that I'm a little cautious.

:D What you have described sounds to me like the normal shape of the older sow. My old girls are just the same; they have big fat bellies but are skinny around the ribs and hips. Let your vet have a look at her if you are worried. As you say that she is behaving normally and back to her usual weight, I think she sounds fine. :tu::tu:

I agree, it is the normal figure of an older piggy, especially if she has had an early pregnancy. After a certain age, the weight will be slower to come back on and it won't necessarily come on the same place as before.
This is my three year old Iola (who is anything but small or skinny!)

However, if in doubt, have her checked by your vet.

She isn't that old, she's only just turned three. I'm not hugely worried but it's a recent development following weight loss when she was recovering from an URI.

I noticed that when my middle-aged sow, Sundae, lost weight after a dental abscess surgery, she didn't put it on as evenly as it had been distributed before. It came on more around her middle, she was more pear-shaped and less brick-shaped, if that makes sense. This may be the same thing.
