Hello there. I'm new here and I decided to register looking for some help regarding my newly-purchased Guinea Pig, Citrom. She's an adorable, beautiful creature with a fantastic fur coloration. I found her in a pet shop here in Cairo, they basically treated her and the other animals like filth. She was soaked in dry feces, I could feel her spine when I fondled her back, that's how skinny she was, and she was sitting in a stinking pile of rotten vegetables, her nails incredibly long and she looked like she was going to die the next day.. I decided to rescue her and help her get back in shape. I bathed her before putting her in her new, large cage, and she smells and looks great, asides from the skinniness... There's a water bottle she happily drinks from, two dishes, one full of small bird seeds and a few sunflower seeds here and there, she seems to love eating that, and the other dish is an array of veggies. Cucumber slices, carrot slices, lettuce, a bell pepper, and a tiny piece of watermelon. I read that these wonderful creatures need a certain intake of Vitamin C as their bodies do not produce it naturally, so I put those veggies in there for her. I'm not sure if I can find guinea pig pellets, but I'll certainly do my best to search for them.. As for hay, I'm currently waiting for a batch of berseem clover hay to feed her, which will probably come tomorrow.. She's in her cage now, comfy and warm, and she seems to loves it, still a bit afraid of my handling, but she's happier than ever. I clipped very tiny bits of her hind nails today as I read that the blood vessel in there is really close to the tip, and it tends to grow with the nail, so I have to gradually clip and clip tiny pieces. Whenever I pick her up and take her onto my lap, she scratches hard with her hind claws, though she never bites, and I love how peaceful and naturally gentle she is, and i Know she's only doing it out of fear. I'd love a few tips if anyone's willing, and please correct me if I've done something wrong with the feeding. Here's a few pictures of her for reference, I really think she's unnaturally skinny for a Guinea pig, let me know if I'm wrong:

Well done on rescuing her. What a horrible way to treat small animals.

I heard that seeds are not good for guinea pigs. The best thing to feed them is pellets but as you said you can't seem to find them I'm sure someone else can come along to give you better advice reguarding that.

Their diet is 80% hay or so so they mostly need that. Vegetables should be feed once a day and occasionally as treats. Has she ever had vegetables before? Too many at one go can make her have tummy troubles.

Grass is another thing thats nice for them but try not to feed her much to start off with as it can cause bloat if a piggy is not used to it.

I hope someone with better advice can come along soon to help.

She seems to be a very curious adorable piggy.

As an extra note, guinea pigs are herd animals so best to be in groups of two. I'd reccomend getting a friend for her eventually if you can. :)

How lovely, a member from Cairo! I was there on holiday in August 2000.

You can look in the forum's Food section for guidelines on piggy dietary requirements. I think the reason seeds are not good for them is too much fat and piggies can choke on them. I do give mine the occasional shelled sunflower seeds as a treat (like once a month) because piggies do love them and they are full of vitamin C. Shelling them prevents choking.

If you can't source piggy pellets with added vitamin D3 you will need to have your piggy get a few minutes sunshine on its body several times a week. I know Cairo can be hot and piggies are prone to heat stress. So it would be best to just hold your piggy in your arms for about 5 minutes so the sun hits its back fur.

By the way, absolutely beautiful piggy and good on you for getting her out of those horrible conditions.

Welcome to the forum :). Do you happen to know her age or weight? That will give our more experienced members an idea if she is too thin, and what you can do to fatten her up, so to speak. Sorry I don't have much advice, but well done on rescuing her, and she is stunning!

I've done a little scout on the internet and it says that most pet shops have guinea pig food in Cairo. You may need to hunt around but I really think that would be better than seed.

Like others have said it would be great to get her a friend. How old is the little piggy and how much does she weigh?

I can't really add much to the great advice already given. I just want to say she is beautiful and I hope she feels better soon. Well done for rescuing her.

Well done for rescuing this poor little thing. What will you name her? She does look very underweight. How disgusting for the pet shop to have her and treat her in such a way. Were there any more guinea pig in there? I am not sure if you know how to sex guinea pigs so she may even be a boy!

Yes, that's what I've heard too regarding seeds, though I wasn't certain.. I certainly won't make them her main diet, a small treat every now and then. The grass here in our backyard, unfortunately, has pesticide ): As for the hay, I'll probably start feeding her that today. Yep, she's certainly had vegetables, rotten ones to say the least.. That's what I saw at the pet store, and they rarely changed the veggies even if they grew nasty. And I'll see what I can do about getting her a friend :) Thank you so much for the help and taking the time to reply, it means a lot for me and Citrom <:

Yes :p Though Cairo's certainly not what it used to be back then. Egypt does have it's beautiful locations, they're just not in Lower Egypt at all, most of them. I will, thanks :) I'll have to change most of her diet, it seems.. Can I buy the vitamin D3 supplement from a pharmacy and dissolve it in water? I'm not sure I can find these Guinea pellets or their vitamins easily here, as not many in Egypt own guinea pigs or even consider them as pets rather than as "big rats".. Disgusting, I know ): I'll have to conduct a more thorough search, I'm sure I'll eventually find something. I'll certainly carry her out into the sun every now and then, though, of course :) And maybe I can grow her some grass in my room for food, as well <: Thank you too for the advice ^_^ I was a the local "pet store" and I noticed 5 or 6 guinea pigs, incredibly underweight, weak, and very ill-looking, all of them cluttered up in a tiny metal bucket.. I asked the vendor to bring down one of the dozens of hamster cages for them to stay in, as those were far bigger and more comfortable, but he refused... I went to the same store the next day, and they were gone, I could guess what happened to them. Just shocking and heartbreaking ): I could tell you more about other animals, and what I saw there.. But it's just really awfully disturbing, and I don't think there's any animal rights group here in Egypt who cares. Animals in pet stores, most of them, are treated worse than shoes in a store, cluttered up, tiny cages of starving, heat-suffering animals from the tiniest of kittens to the largest of dogs. It's all about money for these people. Disgusting..

Thanks ^_^ I'm not too sure about her age, but she feels about 2-3 kg when I hold her. She's a young one for sure, though, she looks like she recently sexually matured.

Thanks :) I'll certainly do so. She is beautiful ^_^ And she's already feeling much better, very curious and loves exploring my room xD

Thanks, as well <: I named her Citrom, which means "Lemon" in Hungarian xD I named her after my partner's gorgeous cat ^_^ Yes, disgusting would be an understatement.. I don't think there were more, I certainly hope not.. But that won't make a difference, as the store always imports guinea pigs as well as dozens and dozens of Syrian hamsters cluttered in cages, it's what they import the most, actually.. While I was there, there were 5 or 6 hamsters were dead in their cage, rotting, actually, 3 were barely breathing from the heat, and the rest were barely able to walk around the cage. I told the vendor and he simply grabbed the first dead hamster he saw from it's skin and threw it onto the street next to a sewer drain.. I was just more than shocked, I couldn't really find words to express how disgusted I was, I felt like letting all those animals loose, or buying all of them and releasing them into a huge, vast meadow if I was able to do so..

Gosh I really am so upset to hear how the poor animals are treated. I know Egypt have no laws to protect animals. It is so unfair and disgusting. The poor things will have such a sad life. Thank goodness you have one little baby that you saved and can give a good life. You cannot dissolve vitamins in water for guinea pigs. It is lost through evaporation. My guinea pigs have vitamin C. I crush a tablet and spread it on a slice of cucumber for them to have. I buy ones for small animals but maybe you could buy childrens ones and half them.

It's even more upsetting seeing it in person.. And yes, we don't :( But exactly, I'm glad at least I could give her a good life.. I'll certainly buy children's vitamin C tablets for her <: The cucumber trick sounds fantastic! xD Any idea how I can litter-train her? <: I read that it's possible to litter-train piggies, she just took a massive poop next to my hamster cages and I just cleaned it xD I could easily sex her as I've sexed hamster many times before, btw <: Male rodents in general have very large testicles and the anal opening and the genital are far apart for males, but close together for females.

I have never been able to litter train any of my guinea pigs. I would not bother if I were you but if you want to you have to put any poops and wet bedding in the litter tray and encourage her to go there. What bedding do you have her on? I dont suppose they have fleece there?

I have her on the same bedding I use for my hamsters, soft, very powdery wood shavings, I put a soft cloth in the middle of the cage for her to sleep on, as for some reason, I have a feeling sleeping on wood shavings isn't so comfortable xD I can place a fleece blanket instead, if I manage to find one <: I think we have an old one here at home we bought from Canada, I'll try to find that.

The fleece has to be 100% polyester. You need towels under it too. The fleece wicks the pee to the towels so the piggies are not wet. The seeds are also a choking hazard. They also make piggies fat. Dog blankets are sold some place and are really cheap too. She is also beautiful x)

Oh God, thank you so much for those tips xD I believe the fleece is 100% polyester, yes <: That sounds unbelievably clever and interesting.. I'll certainly be doing that tonight and get rid of these awful wood chips. And as for the seeds, I've stopped feeding her those. I'd love to buy her one of those beautiful little plush houses, and she really has nowhere to hide or sleep, unlike my hamsters. The house that was in the cage is too small for her.. I'll try my best to find something ): Though she certainly seems happy and loves drinking water ^_^ And thank you <: She is, she's really gorgeous and has such a fantastic, adorable personality.. And the sounds she makes, those gentle little purrs are ridiculously sweet and cute.

It sounds like shes very happy to have been saved by you.

As for places to hide or cuddle up into, I have a basket in my piggies cage that they sit in. It's a small dogs basket. One of my piggies loves being in there. I don't know if your cage is big enough so you coul try and give them a cardboard box, piggies love that to cuddle up into as well.

Oh, that sounds like a nice idea :) The cage is quite spacious, yes, I'm currently looking for something perfect. If I can't find anything, I'll resort to a cardboard box, if I can even find one xD Thanks a lot for the tips.

No problem. Or if you have the possibility of learning to make things, people make guinea pig cosies that piggies cuddle up into, or cuddle cups.

Hi again. Regarding your question on Vitamin D3, as another member said for vitamin C, it is not a good idea to put anything in their drinking water. Every piggy is different in how much they drink so you won't be able to ensure she is getting the right dosage. Also, adding stuff to the water can change the taste so that some piggies won't drink it at all.

You can get vitamin D3 in tablet form and crush it over their food like the vitamin C tablets. Make sure any vitamins you get from the chemist are meant for children as adult doses are too high.

I am stressing the vitamin D3 as I discovered it is an often overlooked item here in my corner of Australia. Vitamin C is always mentioned for piggies but you can supply enough of this for them in terms of vegies and grass. There is no way to give them vitamin D3 except in artifical vitamin form or by exposure to sun.

Wow, that's fantastic and incredibly cute, I'll certainly be making this. I found her this big jar and put a cloth inside, it'll do for until I make this adorable little cuddle cup. Thanks a lot ^_^

That's just what I did today, I took her out into the sun for 20 or so minutes, she seemed to love it. I'll certainly buy the vitamin just in case I need it, though, and as for the veggies and Vitamin C, that's what I thought, too ^_^Thanks :)

I just went to a local pharmacy and bought this children's syrup containing 50mg Calcium Laevulinate, 1000 IU Vitamin D3, and 10 mcg Vitamin B12. I couldn't find any tablets, and the vendor told me to buy this. It's 120 ml, any idea if this is safe and ok to use with my guinea, Citrom?

I would not use it as it will have a lot of sugar due to the syrup. It would not be good for her teeth.

Oh my ): I guess I'll have to search in another pharmacy, I'm sure they'll have the tablets. Thanks for letting me know :)

You are such a wonderful guinea pig mummy ( or daddy) and it is lovely to hear how much you are doing for your little one. How is she today?

I'm a Piggy Daddy, yep ^_^ I always try to put myself in my pets' place, and I imagine how comfortable it would be for them, so I really do want the best for her and my hamsters, as well as the parakeets, who seem to love it here xD Thank you so much :) She's doing great, a bit scared for some reason, but I think she just needs to do some exploring and get used to the place, it usually takes time for animals to adjust to their surroundings. I'll let her out now, and the cage door is always open for her <:

Guinea pigs do take a while to get used to their surroundings and she is living alone which will make her even more timid. Are you from Egypt? I am half Egyptian although I never go there.

Yep, that's why I'm planning on buying a fellow guinea for her today <: Would it be better if I purchased a female or a male? ^_^ And yes, I am <: I'm half-Egyptian, too xD The country's a mess, in all aspects

A female! You cannot get a male or they will mate and that is dangerous for her. Oh funny you are also half Egyptian. Have you always lived there? It must be hard for an animal lover.

Oh D: Thanks for telling me <: I'll certainly buy a female, then. ^_^ I've spent most of my life here, and 3 years in Toronto. It's very hard, yes, and disturbing seeing the things I've seen happen to animals here, and it's not just that, Egyptians are such a discriminative society and think they're the best in the world, when it's quite the opposite for most of them. I've been lucky to know some great Egyptians , though, including my Grandmother. It's really shocking and surprising to see how Egypt treats animals these days, and the fact that they have no rights at all, when back in the ancient days, all animals were sacred, especially cats.. Which are now considered filth and many people kill them because they find them "annoying"

Oh my god that is disgusting. It really angers me. My cousins often get cats and they run away or they breed them. It makes me really angry but they have such a backward way of thinking about animals and treat them as nothing. I am glad you are different. When you get a female you have to introduce them on a neutral ground. If you put them both in the cage they will fight. Have you weighed your little one? It may be a good idea to keep a record of her weight so you know when she loses any.

It is ): It's really beyond sickening how animals are treated here...Some drivers in Egypt intentionally drive towards animals just to kill them, especially cats and dogs.. And whenever I tell strangers that I have hamsters or guinea pigs, they ask if I'm buying them to dissect them or use them for experiments. o_o And wow, that makes a lot of sense, I certainly will introduce them like that, thank you <: I haven't weighed her yet, but only because the scale we have is broken ): I'll weigh here at my Grandmother's, we'll be going there in a few moments.

I cannot believe people could be so evil and that nothing is done for these poor animals. You must be so angry and frustrated seeing things like that. If somebody rich could go there and help animals it would be amazing.
