Hello, my fellow piggy parents!
About a month ago, my sister's skinny pig (Dobby) died mysteriously. He was only seven months old and appeared perfectly healthy.
My sister had two other pigs that were living in the same area, and in case Dobby had developed a spreadable disease, we want to figure out what caused his death. Any ideas?

Hi and welcome

I am very sorry about Dobby's early death.

The only way to find out is a post-mortem examination at a vet's, and it is a bit late for that. Otherwise it remains a guessing game. Strokes, heart attacks and sudden heart failure can happen at any age.

If you are worried about an infectious disease, then please have any surviving guinea pigs in contact vet checked and quarantine/put them under observation for 2-3 weeks after a suspicious death. After that time most infectious diseases will have shown up if they have spread to others.
Importance Of Quarantine

As others have said, there is really no way to know for sure. Sudden deaths in young pigs can be caused by a variety of factors... heart attack, stroke, very aggressive bacterial illness, poisoning, heat stroke... just to name a few. The 'good' news is that if it has been a month and the other pigs are fine, it's unlikely that they have contracted any sort of contagious illness.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Dobby is such a cute name for a skinny pig!
