Hi!

I'm currently fostering (probably keeping) a skinny pig. I took him in from an friend of a friend leaving an unsafe relationship.

We keep our house at like 15-20 degrees in winter but it sometimes drops lower at night. Our skinny is alone (if we keep him, we'll bond him asap, we only got him days ago). He has blankets under his indoor cage, a blanket on top (with air gaps obviously) at night, a plastic hidey filled with hay, a fleece cuddle pocket he won't touch, and a heating pad (pet safe) en route.
Is that going to keep him warm enough?

Haired piggies are most comfortable between 18 and 22 with 15 or lower being too cold. I know skinnies need to be kept warmer than that and using the heatpads and fleece hides would be advisable if you can’t keep the house temperature up and stop it from dropping to 15

Mine are kept at a minimum at 20 during the colder months as they do feel it more than the haired pigs :)

I think as long as you offer warm places for him within the cage (snuggle safes, etc.) then he always has the choice to seek out warmth.
I think fleece tunnels and hides are essential, as I am sure one of our skinny pig people said they can be funny about hay touching their skin, so are less likely to burrow than a regular pig.

I also think having some form of additional plug in heater on standby would be a good idea. That way you have the option to heat just that room if needed.

With my two skinny’s in the herd for winter this time round I invested in a oil filled radiator for the pig room to keep it a steady temperature. I prefer to be cooler so didn’t like the idea of sweating all winter in the rest of the house to keep them warm! Now I just feel like i’m in a different climate in their room (😂) but the skinny’s love it and are out in the open more than when it was dropping a bit cooler.
We keep the room about 21-22.5 ish. They have oodles of fleece hiding spots too.

Hiya! Just seen this- our boys absolutely love these off eBay- keeps them cosy all day and night. They hide under them all the time.
We have the heating on a timer to come on at 4/5am and use snuggle safe heat packs for them before bed. They love those and make a beeline for them whenever we recharge them.
Good luck! 🤍🖤
