Hi
I have a skinny pig I believe has an allergy to timothy hay. It causes skin irritation. I have found the only hay she can have is orchard hay, which they get on really well with, and I don't give her any of the manufactured treats. The only thing I think I need to change is her pellets, she is currently on science selective grain free which she loves, but I am aware it has timothy hay in. Any suggestions on alternatives with no timothy hay in? She is a 3-4 year old guinea pig.

Thank you

Are the pellets definitely irritating her skin also?
(I ask this as I wonder it may just be actual hay touching her skin rather than pellets being eaten)

The only pellets I can think of would be piggie parcels (a company run by a member of this forum) as they are a mix of grasses - they do still contain Timothy though but it might be lower quantities due to being a mix rather than primary ingredient?

Guinea Pig Pellet - Concentrate

Off the top of my head I can’t think of a commercial pellet which would not contain Timothy but would still otherwise be suitable - if they don’t contain Timothy then they probably aren’t going to be suitable to feed anyway due to other ingredients.

Alternative would be to cut pellets out entirely if they are definitely causing her problems.

Thank you. I have tried piggy parcels but they wouldn't eat them. It is the only thing left that contains Timothy hay, but I do also think tomato's cause it to flare up, but I stopped giving these anyway.

It sounds like I am doing all I can for now. But I will try to monitor her flareups to see if there is any other possible causes. It is alot better than it used to be.

Pellets aren’t essential in the diet so they can be stopped entirely

I would also say that if you haven’t already, then do see a vet. True allergies are very rare so speaking to a vet is important

I have taken her to a vet and she has a steroid cream for flare ups, luckily it's much rarer now that they occur.

Thank you everyone
