When it rains it pours!
After a really hard day I found Mr Branston squinting. I bathed his eye and got a long piece of hay out but his upper eye lid is still swollen. There is no cloudiness thank god.
We have an appointment in 30mins to check him over though. I’ve never experienced hay pokes before with any of my other piggies but Branston has had 2. One was very mild (needed no treatment) and this one. I wonder if skinny pigs are more prone as they have less fur to catch any hay.

Hi! All the best! Good having him seen promptly; that means the infection cannot get as bad asn should hopefully heal quickly without any problems.

Some piggies have looser lids or are more prone to just dive into hay. :mal:

Poor Branston! Hope he's ok. Our skinny pig hates the feel of deep hay on her naked skin so I doubt she'd ever get a haypoke, she waits for her furry husband to roll about in the hay and flatten it before she joins him in the hay tray!

I had all three of my hairy pigs at the vets with hay pokes in the first half of this year! They are hay-divers though: (all three are in there somewhere)

I've got one (hairy) guinea pig who seems to get a lot of hay pokes. 3 x eye, 2 x nose and an abcess on his chest the vet suspects was caused by a hay poke. I have a good feel of every handful of hay I put in the cage and pull out any sharp bits I feel. I have watched him and he has a novel way of ducking his nose under any hay and shaking it up over his head, I suspect this is the reason he's so prone to pokes. I hope your piggie gets well very quickly.

The only one in our house who ever got a haypoke injury is... me! Lol.
I opened a bag of timothy hay on the dusty end and a bit went in my eye and I ignored it all day and rubbed it then ended up with a corneal contusion and eye drops!
Its always an accident waiting to happen with piggies (and hapless piggy slaves) though :)
