I'm feeling very sad today as my gerbil, Albert has died leaving behind his two brothers Derek and Rodney. He was only 18 months old :(

He had gained a bit of weight over the last few weeks but we just assumed he was getting chunky as he's always been the biggest out of the 3. He became unwell last night and ballooned in size :( We were going to make him a vets appointment for today but never got the chance :(

I just hope that he didn't suffer too much and whatever it was isn't genetic.

Sleep tight Albert, my beautiful boy xxxxx

(Sorry, I don't have a photo as I've ran out of data on my phone and all my photos are on there but I will add one at a later date)

Nooo, I'm so sorry to hear this, look after yourself x

Abbi got big before she got sick and died, the vet could feel a lump inside her. I reckon she had a cyst or abscess. Maybe what albert had? Nothing you can do i dont think.

I’m sorry to hear about Abbi. I tried to have a feel of him last night but just felt how big he was :( his eyes were half closed too :( I’m wondering if it could have been bloat or something although I guess we’ll never know. I feel so bad that I didn’t get him to a vet in time even though I know there’s nothing a vet could have done other than pts. I’m just sad as he was so young :( We’ve cleaned the tank out so the other two have a nice clean bed but it seems so empty without Albert :(

I looked it up, and it points towards a cyst or abscess thats probably put strain on some organs. I learnt something the other night, on the gerbil forum, it sais when cleaning out gerbils, you must leave some old bedding in, to stop any fights. I never thought of doing this

Aw poor thing if that’s the case :( I take it there’s nothing that could have been done to save him? Oh really? I’ve had gerbils since 2005 and never left old bedding in. I never new that :( Thankfully apart from Wallace and Percy who were the two who had the two scrapes, I’ve never had any fights

I doubt it, not many vets would operate inside a gerbil i doubt. I dont know for sure though, you can get scent gland tumours removed though.

Gerbils do well on anasthetic👍.

I’ve just been reading too and it looks very much like heart failure as that matches his symptoms. My poor boy :(

Poor lad, you gave him a quality life , and atleast he didnt have to go and get p.t.s, he passed away where he liked to be.

So sorry for the loss of your little one. Massive hugs to you.

Sleep well little one

RIP Albert

So sorry about Albert @Claire W, realised I hadn't written here xx
RIP gorgeous little lad x

My last two ratties Ollie and Ziggy (I had 3 brothers) had really similar symptoms, were on meds thinking URIs and really struggling with breathing, gasping with mouth open when at their worst etc, got quite swollen the last couple of days before they passed and we think now it was heart troubles. Hard to diagnose when they come on quickly and they're so tiny.

Sure he had an amazing life getting spoilt by you :) xx

I’m sorry to hear about your ratties :( It is hard when it comes on so suddenly xx

Thanks @Claire W, all 3 broke my heart and why I'm having a break from ratties for a few years!
Hope your two boys are doing well without their brother x and you of course xx

I had two girl ratties a few years ago. They were lovely but one died of a heart attack and the other had ongoing uri’s :(

Thank you, Alberts brothers were a little quiet but they seem ok now. I’m just glad they have each other xx

Ratties and piggies have always been my favourite pets to keep, I've had 4 ratty girls and 7 boys.
But definitely really prone to illnesses and URIs are a nightmare with them bless them.

Pleased your boys are happier xx

Thank you. We had two boy ratties too but they didn’t live long :( xx

They never do :( my oldest lad Angus lived to 2yrs 2months, old for a rat but nothing compared to other beasties.
Theyre great pets to keep but a lot of grief when you lose them!
Didn't stop me staring at a poor lonely girl at p@h by herself in the tank last week though! Tugged at the heartstrings as they get so sad by themselves bless them xx
