Bobby and Geoff came to me in March this year.

It’s currently degu breeding season so hormones are raging. They had a fight last month but calmed down after being separated for half an hour and have been fine together ever since.

Well, they had a huge fight today 😢 We separated them immediately but it was too late for Bobby 😞

I phoned the emergency vet but Bobby died in my lap several minutes later 😞

Sleep tight Bobby, I will always love you and I’m so sorry 😞

Oh No! I’m so sorry Claire, what a terrible shame Sending you big hugs x
Sleep tight little Bobby x

I'm so sorry, I won't go on, but please, whatever you do,Don't blame anything on yourself before you even do. I did the same and retried my two gerbils after a scrap, and months later they had a near death one. It's just on eof those things with gerbils and degus, and you wouldn't have wanted the hassle of getting 2 more then seeing if they worked out with the current 2

Thank you everyone. Thing is, I am blaming myself. May be I shouldn’t have put them back together after the first fight and may be Bobby would still be here if we had separated them faster :(

I’m truly heartbroken :( He wasn’t even 3

He would still be around if you had split them, but you would have two miserable degus living alone. It's really a what if situation, you tried for their best interests

I’m worried that Geoff is now going to be miserable by himself but he’s very territorial and bonding degus is very hard especially when they’re no longer babies. I don’t know what to do and just want my boy back :(

Shadow was fine on his own, he did well, see how he goes... Or try another bond with a single degu maybe, it will be stressful though. I know shadow was fine on his own, but they do say, gerbils and degus are miserable alone.. It tough

It is tough :( I’m glad that Shadow was ok by himself. Sadly, trying him with another isn’t an option as I just do not have the room for another cage should things not work out plus Degus are hard to come by now PAH have stopped selling them. I’ve only found a pair so far and the rescue is miles away :(

I am so very sorry that you lost Bobby in such tragic circumstances.
Don’t try to second guess yourself, ‘what if.......’ is a normal part of grieving.
Be gentle with yourself as you grieve

Just do the only thing you can, keep the other boy single and look out for any signs of depression. Some are fine some go downhill, most of my single gerbils have been OK, one wasn't out of about 4 pairs. I know they are different animals though

Huge hugs to you Claire I am so very sorry for your loss, he had the most perfect home with you. Please be kind to yourself at this sad time x x

sleep well little one

RIP Bobby
x x

Claire please don't blame yourself, you did what you thought was best for both of your boys. You couldn't have foreseen this. Take care of yourself xx

Oh my god Claire, I’m so sorry, just seen this. Definitely wasn’t your fault, please don’t blame yourself. Massive hugs. Sleep tight little Bobby xx

I had the same issue when we lost Poppy, chins are pretty territorial and can get really aggressive too so after 8years with his own territory I thought it was best not to try and bond another chin with Pedro as I didn’t think it would work and he seemed happy by himself. Geoff might enjoy his own company too, especially at the moment with it being breeding season. So don’t feel bad. Chins and degus are such complicated little beasts xx

Thank you everyone. It was awful coming down to just one degu this morning Geoff is thankfully seeming ok so far, just a little quiet.

I never thought that they were so territorial until I had a pair as Marley was always a single goo due to falling out with his brother before we adopted him.

It’s just so hard not to blame myself :(

So so sorry for your loss what a huge shock for you 💔 sleep tight at rainbow bridge and big hugs to your mummy x
