Sleep tight Eliza 29-11-2007 - 09-03-2014

This is the thread I have been dreading writing for so long now :(

You came to me at approximately 12 weeks old on the 29th November 2007 as a companion for Connie. You were the last guinea pig left as you hadn't much interest due to your pink eyes. I fell for you intently though and was not put off by your eye colour. You and Connie hit to off straight away and became the best of friends. It was down to the two of you where my love of guinea pigs began.

When Connie sadly died, we found a new friend for you and Eleanor soon became your new best friend

You lived together happily together for just over a year before I decided to expand to a group and Erin and Ena came to join you both. You were the top sow but so gentle and pleasant, every girl loved you

Sadly in January 2013, Eleanor left for the bridge and neutered boar Enoch came to join your group

Through a cruel twist of events, we lost both Erin and Ena in May 2013 and you had lost your group. It wasn't fair on either you or Enoch not to enjoy the group life style so Emma and Erika came along. You bonded quickly but Emma soon took over the group. You wasn't bothered and both you and Enoch were just happy to be part of a group again.

In September 2013, you sadly had to have your eye removed. Unfortunately things didn't go to plan and you caught an infection within the eye socket. However, you didn't let it bother you and after a few months of leaving the socket open with gruelling days of flushing and draining, the socket started to heal and you moved in back with your friends. The fact you quickly became the bottom of the group still didn't bother you and you enjoyed life to the full.

Things ran smoothly until December when you started to scratch your eye socket open and it became infected again although not to the extent it was before. We moved both you and your friends indoors over the colder months and you went a few months of weekly vet visits, antibiotic combinations, daily cleaning of the socket and a collar last Friday. You have taken it all in your stride but by Sunday, it all got too much for you and your time came to leave for Rainbow Bridge. I am pretty sure your passing was down to old age. I am totally heartbroken. The only consolation I have is that the end came quick and you were at home with your friends looking on.

Run free Eliza. Hopefully reunited with Eleanor, Erin and Ena, running the roost again and excepting Connie in to your group.

I love you so much and life will never be the same again xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

So sorry to hear your loss. I'm afraid it's because we love them so much that it hurts so much when we lose them.

Reading that in tears Claire. I am so sorry, we all know how special a little pig Eliza was and myself like many others on the forum have followed Eliza's story through it ups and downs over the past months. She was a real forum piggie, a one in a million piggie. She had the most amazing life with you and your piggies and you have always cared so deeply for her and fought so hard through every setback and illness, you have done her so proud. Massive hugs to you x x

Sleep well beautiful Eliza

RIP Eliza
x

Claire that was such a beautiful tributes to Eliza. Eliza was so special and loveable. My heart really goes out to you at this terrible time. I am so sorry she was taken from you.x

What a wonderful, loving tribute!

I am so sorry that it was Eliza's time to go; you and her go way back and she has always been your most special piggy. But I am grateful for both of you that you could be there with her when the end came very quickly and that it wasn't down to your decision for once.

Eliza has had a long, very happy life with all her various piggy friends. I know that your current group is missing her very much, too! With your good care, you have bought her time when the imp of the perverse struck yet again last year and you have found her a new, equally snuggly piggy family to look after her in her old age and now help you to cope with your loss.

Eliza will always hold a very special place in your heart and your memories. She's been part and parcel of your life for so long!

Popcorn free with Connie, Ellie, Ena and Erin again, Eliza!

So sorry about Eliza. Beautiful tribute to a beautiful and very special girl. You were a great mummy and gave her a wonderful home. R.I.P Eliza. x x ((hugs))

So sorry to hear this :(
I was keeping an eye on her threat in the Health and Illness section and was always struck by how much of a fighter she seemed. She was a truly special pig and it seems like you were both blessed to have one another.
RIP Eliza x

Thank you for your kind words everyone. They really do mean a lot. Eliza certainly was a fighter with a huge personality. She had many friends over the years and they all adored her, she was so gentle and kind.

Despite the negativity from some people, I have no regrets that I kept her alive until she was ready. My vet never once mentioned that her quality of life was poor and she managed perfectly well with just the one eye despite her problems.

It is taking a lot of getting use to her no longer being around and her friends are missing her too :( xx

I'm really sorry to hear of your sad loss. R.I.P. Eliza. xx

I am truly sorry and devastated for you to have lost Eliza after all you both have been through.
I hope now that she is re-united with all her friends she is popcorning free through the long lush grass.
Rest in Peace now sweet little Eliza, remember you hold fond memories in your mum's heart.
Goodnight and God bless you. x

I'm so sorry Claire - you have worked so hard to enable Eliza to have extra more piggie years....I do understand what that means....and she could;t have asked for any better slave. You have given her a lovely tribute.

I am gutted for you that she has gone to the Bridge for an unrelated reason especially given the level of nursing and care you have provided ref her eye.......(I have had a similar situation......doesn't stop me beating myself up though!)

Our little furries will decide themselves when it's their time to go....All we are required to do is love them and provide them with all the necessary food, security, safety. enrichment vet and nursing care until they make that decision. You did that...in spades!

Like you, the worst situations for me have been "the end of the group/line" and also knowing that despite the successful treatment for a long-standing issue, they went "anyway" (eyes also featured in my situation)

Popcorn free little Eliza.....lucky lady to have enjoyed your time with such a committed and lovely slave..and Claire - you have nothing to blame yourself for!~

Sending you lots of hugs and sympathy at this very sad time

x

Thank you. I like to think that I tried my absolute best for Eliza and I would do it all again.

I am missing her so much as she was a big part of my life for the last 6.5 years and nursing her these last few months brought us even closer.

But knowing that she has been reunited with 'her' group and joined them when she was ready has at least brought me a little closure xx

omg claire I'm so sorry about eliza, I'll miss your stories and updates about her and Enoch. Really thinking of you x
