Sadly whilst we were on holiday two of our guinea pigs left for the rainbow bridge.

Georgie had been suffering from heart failure for a couple of months and we knew he only had a little time left with us. He passed away very quickly and was found in the hay tray with his mouth full of food and next to his favourite girl Mavis. I think this was a good ending to his life. We had said our goodbyes before we went on holiday and knew that he was getting the best care from our friend Paul while we were away. Georgie's last few weeks were full of his favourite treats (as much coriander as he could eat) and a great deal of love.

Georgie was round 6 years old and joined us from The Potteries Guinea Pig Rescue in November 2018, he was one of the Gerties 30 rescue and had previously been living in appalling conditions. He had half an ear missing and was blind in one eye, all of which added to his charm. He became husboar to Mavis and Peggy and was a calming influence on the girls. Although, Peggy put him in his place and remained top piggy but Mavis was happy to be number 3 in the trio. Georgie loved coriander more than any other food and would shout loudly in the mornings if his favourite herb was late arriving. We miss his little face peering out at us from the cage in the morning but are happy in the knowledge that he had a good life here with the girls and was loved by us all.

Hazel's loss came as shock to us. She had passed a tiny amount of blood in her urine a couple of days before we went away. We had taken her straight to the vets as she had a bladder stone removed earlier this year. Our vet was not overly concerned and gave her Metacam and Cerenia and she was booked in for a scan/x-ray the day after we were due home from our holiday. Unfortunately, she suddenly became unable to urinate and was taken to our vet as an emergency. She was hospitalised in their ICU overnight, were she had a catheter inserted with the hope of stabilising her for an emergency x-ray and possibly surgery the following morning. Sadly, Hazel went into gut stasis and her organs began to fail and although our vets did everything they could, she passed away. We had lost two of or piggies in 3 days and our hearts were broken.

We had no idea of Hazel's age, she was tiny piggy at 850g and always had grunty breathing, our vet said it was probably due to a previous untreated sinus infection. Milo picked Hazel for himself at Coseley Guinea Pig Rescue and he became the happiest pig in our herd. Milo learnt how to be a piggy from Hazel and popcorned for the first time. It was funny to see this large 1.3kg boar being bossed around by this tiny sow. Milo followed her everywhere and they were rarely apart. Even when Hazel had her bladder stone removed he spent four days at the vets with her (and lost more weight than she did). Hazel had the loudest wheek of all our piggies, she would stand each morning with her paws on the edge of the hay tray and not stop wheeking until her breakfast arrived. She could actually wheek so loud you could hear her over the noise of the vacuum cleaner. Hazel was never really a people piggy and we respected this, she would let you rub her nose or would sit on your lap for a few minutes as long as there was food but then wanted to be back in the run or her cage. We are sorry that neither us or Milo were able to be with you at the end of your life but know that you were loved and are missed very much in the piggy room.

We too had a soft spot for Georgie. He lived a good life right up until the end. He was always first to greet us in the mornings, even when he was poorly and had a gentle soul. The girls have been a little fractious without him but I'm hoping they will settle down.

So so sorry for your losses. What a terribly difficult time for you all.
We are thinking of you and sending lots of love! 💕

They had fantastic lives with you and will be popcorning around the rainbow bridge now 🌈
