It's taken me a little while to be able to write this. I know i shouldn't have favourites but Mavis was definitely mine.
Mavis came to us on 5 May 2018 with her friend Peggy from Little Pips Guinea Pig Rescue in Devon. We drove there and back from Manchester in a day to collect them on what was the hottest day of the year so far. Mavis and Peggy were 2 years old and chunky girls at over 1.2kg, very different from the small hairless guinea pigs we already had.
They settled in really well and it soon became obvious that Mavis was obsessed with food, she ate absolutely everything we put in front of her and would shout for more every time i came into the room. Her favourite things to were dried apple and fresh grass. She would have given her little piggy soul for a piece of dried apple.
She had a big personality but was always happy being bottom piggy and loved every pig. When we introduced the girls to Georgie who was to become their husboar she happily accepted him into the herd. Mavis was not a cuddly pig with her hoomans but liked to wander around the sofa and would come up and lick your hands and would sometimes sit on your lap, especially if you were popping food into her mouth.
However, she loved a nose rub and was the calmest piggy i have met. Even our vet commented on how good natured she was.
Sadly we lost Georgie to heart disease a couple of years ago and the girls went back to being a pair. As the they got older they became very close, sleeping together in the hay and very rarely apart. A few weeks ago Mavis was diagnosed with lymphoma and we decided on palliative care as she was 7 years old. Mavis had another few good weeks eating well and still enjoying life. Sadly, she started to decline and getting around became difficult for her. One day she climbed into her fleecy bed and didn't get out for her food. We decide then that it was time to say our goodbyes, give her a last pile of fresh grass to nibble on and Our lovely vet helped her across the rainbow bridge.
Goodbye sweet girl, you are greatly missed.
