Yesterday evening we made the heartbreaking decision to have Smudge put to sleep. He’d only recently been diagnosed with kidney stones, had lost a lot of weight and during his last day he stopped eating and his little body began to give up. We knew then that it wasn’t fair to put him through any more suffering as we’ve been down that road before and were determined not to make the same mistake again.
We had Smudge and his brother Boo from when they were around 6 weeks old. So frightened of everything in those first few weeks but after a while their personalities started to emerge. We always saw Smudge as the quiet and intelligent one, waiting to see where you were going to place the food bowl whilst Boo would be on his hind legs biting at the cage bars to get at the food, not realising we had already put it in the cage right behind him! This would happen every time without fail. During floortime we loved watching Smudge form the rear carriage of the piggy train with dominant Boo in control at the front. Smudge was always so sweet and well-behaved – even at the vets. When they needed to shave his belly for a scan, they laid him on his side and he let them do what they needed to without any fuss! Everyone who met him fell in love with his handsome little face and tufty bum! We were hoping to have Smudge around for many more years but we sadly lost him at the age of 4. It just doesn’t seem right. We miss him so much.
