Adult Guinea Pig
Our dear little Ash passed away in the early hours of this morning. He had been dealing with an aural cholesteatoma in his right ear for months now, unfortunately very common in older gerbils over 2 years old. He had been doing very well on sulfatrim and metacam however yesterday I came back from running to find him collapsed in his bowl of baby food, very cold. I wrapped him in a towel and sat him on a heat pad to get him warmed up, repeatedly he crawled out and hopped around until I let him crawl onto my hand, where he stayed fast asleep, until he passed away a couple of hours later following a short seizure.
Ash was such a brave and..ridiculous little man, right up to the end. He was always doing something silly, like making a mad dash for freedom while at the vets on more than one occasion after lulling us into a false sense of security by laying completely still.
It's been a joy to have gerbils again, although I think I need a bit of a gap before having more. They don't live nearly long enough.
Sleep well Ash, back with your brother Juniper after 10 months apart. You will be very much missed.
