Junior Guinea Pig
Shambo came into my life in a funny way, I was at the pet shop with my other half to pick up food for Rillo (our 'main' girl) when we saw this little white piggy, not in the pen with all the others, but in a cage on his own.
He looked so sad. I asked the girl why he was separated and she said he had been bought by someone a few months previously but the woman had taken him back to the shop as he didn't get along with her other pigs because he kept trying to mate with them.
He had been in the shop for rehoming for about a month but as he was 8 months old & quite a big boy, he was being overlooked for the little babies. Nobody seemed to want him.
I gave him a cuddle & he was so friendly. I felt as if he was purposely there for me, so we brought him home.
I couldn't house him with Rillo (as she hadn't been spayed & was over a year old so certainly couldn't risk her getting pregnant) so the old cage came down from the loft & new bits & pieces were bought.
Shambo LOVED his floor time with Rillo. They got on brilliantly, but Sham being Sham, really wanted a friend so we bought him 2 girlfriends (Loulou & Rasper).
He had a couple of litters with both girls (we kept a girl & boy from his first litter with LouLou & a girl from his first litter with Rasper) who were all rehomed with friends of mine so the contact was still there
Shambo's problems came out of nowhere with an 'eye-pop' that we thought had resulted from an injury. He had his eye removed & the op went well but sadly it was the beginning of the end. A few days after the surgery he seemed to develop co-ordination issues and couldn't seem to eat despite wanting & trying to. He also couldn't move his back legs & they were just floppy.
Despite the vets hospitalising him & trying all sorts of different things, it was clear that there were severe neurological issues & that he was in so much pain with no quality of life, so after lots of soul searching, we decided the best thing we could do for him was to put him to sleep.
We were with him while he passed & although in my heart I know I've done what's best for him, it hurts so much. Sleep well my beautiful boy, you truly were one in a million x
