I've had Toffee and Biscuit (my first ever guinea pigs) for nearly a year now and in that time have learned a lot. However I still panic a bit when I see them doing something 'different' and wonder if they are ok. Over the past couple of weeks Toffee has started sleeping in the open in a corner of the cage instead of going into one of their hideys - and I'm just wondering why? Is this normal? Is it ok? Does it just mean he feels relaxed enough not to want to hide or is there some other reason? In all other ways he seems perfectly fine so am I just being silly and worrying about nothing or could there be some sort of problem?

(Just to add - I don't mean all the time, he still uses the hideys but much less than he used to and much less than Biscuit)

Mr Pig often sleeps in the open, I have hides, he has a full hutch to himself but he can often be seen sleeping in the open and with his eyes closed🙂

That's what I thought really but I'm a bit of a worrier and just wanted to make sure , Thanks for the reassurance :)

This is good to know thank you. My year old boar I've seen a couple of times sleeping in the open (still close to a hidey or tunnel). I guessed it was he felt safe so thanks for this thread

My piggies came to me a few months ago and they just started laying down and resting out in the open recently. It was a happy moment when I first saw them doing it because it really shows how comfortable they feel in their environment! You must be doing a good job at making them feel safe 🙂
