So I have a question that may be a bit silly or even stupid. Do guinea pigs sleep with their eyes open? We've had Oreo and Cuddles since September '09, and Ash and Nutmeg since May of this year. In this time, we have seen them resting, and sleeping, I think. The reason I am not sure they are sleeping is because their eyes never completely close! I mean their little eyes close about 1/2 way to maybe 3/4, but that's it. So do I have bizarre little guys on my hand, or do they just sleep with their eyes partially open? I've been too chicken to ask, but since I have not seen it mentioned elsewhere, I figured now is as a good a time as any lol. The only thing I can think of is that it may be a trait from when they were all in the wilds and they are generally easy prey? Can anyone please help solve this mystery for me? I'd appreciate all the help. :)

You're about right there! Some pigs keep their eyes fully open to sleep, some close their eyes fully, some partially close their eyes. Each pig is different but whether they sleep with their eyes open or closed, both are normal. :)

LOL never knew that some sleep with their eyes open! Thats amazing.:)
And just another question how many hours do guinea pigs sleep for? I've always been wondering.;) Byeeeeeeeeeee.

I don't think there is a particular amount of time to be honest. Their three main activities are eating, pooping and sleeping so divide that time up as you will....... :))

I have never seen my Albert sleeping he always hides away but Bert will crash out any where and he is a eyes fully open kind of sleeper, which is a pain as it makes him jump 10x's more than eyes closed sleepers !

Mine sleep with their eyes wide open, which was a bit unnerving when I first had them! My partner thought there was something seriously wrong the first time he saw it. BTW, ducks sleep with their eyes open too. Presumably they can still be aware of predators creeping up on them even though they are asleep?

Mine sleep half open. Mine always become flat when they are sleeping too!

mac quite often looks dead when he throws himself down and closes his eyes to sleep. all of mine sleep with their eyes closed and eyes open
