Ive just been feeding/spot cleaning Montys hutch and have just checked his rear end - which had to be done twice daily as he is one of those guineas who in his later years has become impacted.

Today his tummy was all wet - I only cleaned the hutch totally last night and hes on paper/megazorb/hay so thats dry so basically think he had wet himself.

Have wiped him and dried him but just wondering is this linked to the fact he gets impacted a lot on a regular basis or might just be linked to his age he will be 5 next year.

He has probiotics in his water.

Hope this is not the start of an problems - hes eating/drinking well and very happy in himself so not too worried but wont be good for him if he is going to start wetting himself:(

This problem can be linked to cystitis, so do look out for other symptoms of it just in case. It could be a case of he just sat in his pee and didn't bother to move, especially as he is an older boar, but if it is unusual for him I'd be inclined to keep an eye on him in case it is a UTI starting up.

Thank you - he seems his usual chirpy self and does not appear worried by a wet tum - Il keep checking him and will clean/dry the area as dont want him getting any infections or sore areas.

I can keep him nice and clean but want him to be comfy:)

He's sat eating his fave cucumber at the mo, seems fine - just me worrying!

No sign of blood on the bedding but think over the weekend Il put him in his carry box on plain paper or a white towel so I can check the colour of his pee and check that there is no blood in the urine.

I'm just guessing he is being lazy - does seem that way now - he does try to do his business but often waits for me to sort him out! Think It's one of those older guinea traits.

Keep a nose out - I usually recognise a new bout of cystitis by the unmistakeable strong stale smell of the infected urine.

Hopefully, it will be just your boy being lazy!

Didnt smell anything when doing a total hutch clean yesterday - will keep a nose out - thanks.

Think Monty has got very lazy with his toilet habits - I do try to leave him in the hope that he will sort himself out - he does very occasionally but most times needs some help. We are both use to it now hardly takes anytime and doesnt bother either of us but dont want a damp guinea!

Hope its just him being lazy but will keep a close eye on him - will be about more now as only working next Mon, Tue and half day Weds then hol time:)

Hi Ali

If he's that wet...lazy toilet habits or no......UTI is most likely......

Sorry to be bearer of bad tidings and all that

(just gone through same thing with Beechie boy who had impaction/gut stasis etc...still despite all of that going on..when the urine wet thingy started, was indeed a UTI ...which septrin cleared within a couple of days...but keeping him on for two weeks as early withdrwal brought back the symptoms )

Thanks - I'm keeping a close eye on this as best to be careful and get treatment if needed, especially with reduced xmas opening times for vets. I need to take Leo bunny for his nail trim over the next couple of weeks so might take him next week and take Monty too for a check up. Will see how he goes as he can get stressed if you take him out as he is not keen on his carry box. If I'm walking up to the vets Its hard to carry Leo and Monty - only a 10 min walk but Leo needs a large carry box. Could do 2 journeys as Monty might be better carried in a towel against me or Il see if Dad will take us up there.

To which vet do you take your animals?

Never needed to take Leo apart from his nails and the guineas have always been pretty healthy. I have to use the local vets as It's within walking distance as I dont drive. Clent Hills Vets. They were fantastic with our staffie Jed when we had him but do wish we had a rodentologist nearby as Id rather use a specialist rodentologist if we had one!

The nearest pig enthusiast is about 20 miles away from you.
The nearest vet to you is Helen Priest who works at a surgery in Wordsley and in Dudley.

Thanks dont think Dad will take me 20 miles for a rodentologist Wordsley is about 6 miles away so not impossible - do you know which surgery Helen works at?

Am pleased to say that Monty had a dry tum/bum today - for some reason it was a wet chin today so really thinking it is a case of Monty being a lazy boy! Will be keeping a close eye on him x

Apologies, she moved from Wordsley and is now at Dudley, in a group practice.
Tel 01384252817, it says on the appointment card "Exotic pets by appointment only"

Thank you will make a note of the number for future ref in case ever needed.

Dudley is about 10 miles away - not impossible to get Dad to take me if ever an emergency but not poss for routine visits/check ups really.

Our vet is said to be a specialist in exotic pets but hes never seen any of our guineas, just our dog when we had him. Id personally rather go to another vets but this one is so close its much more practical with me not driving.
