Hello, I have been away with work for a couple of days, piggies looked after by OH, on my return Jasmine seems to have developed a slight limp on her front leg. She does not seem to mind when I press it etc is still running around on it, putting her weight mostly on it, still whizzing up and down the ramp...I cant see anything stuck in her leg, it doesnt seem swollen. They have vit C tablets every day (60mg sainsburys chewable tabs) and lots of fresh veg (I just read it can be scurvy but I think I can rule that out). I have some Loxicom which shes just been on for an abscess very recently so have given her that for now, and I have her booked into the vets tonight but wondering if I should rush to the vets when theres no apparent reason? or give her a couple of days and see how she is by Monday?...

Any thoughts on what it might be from anyone with experience? The ramp in their hutch has a side and the hole has a 'bannister'(!) so she cant have fallen anywhere I dont think....

thanks :)

Well the vet couldnt see anything obviously wrong - but shes def still limping bless her! at veggie time she flew up the ramp and you could hear the missed footsteps! :( vet said keep an eye on her, take her back if she gets worse or not better - (such useful advise sometimes....I was just going to leave her rolleyes sorry note the sarcasm) anyway fingers crossed she'll be ok

aww poor doll. the funny thing about gpigs is that since they're prey animals they are good at hiding pain (not to worry you more). did the vet give an xray?

I wouldn't panic just yet, a lot of piggies get slight muscle injuries from popcorning or running around. As long as there is no sign of swelling or pain when examining the leg, and a vet visit has confirmed, then the likelihood is that it will heal in a few days. If the leg becomes swollen, the foot change colour (if it's not black naturally) or your piggy is in obvious discomfort then a return visit is called for, also if the pig doesn't recover completely within a week.

I would not worry too much, espeically as the vet couldn't find anything. It is quite easily to sprain a joint or pull a muscle in an active piggy. Hopefully, the limp will disappear over the next few days.

I came back home from holiday to find my Nia limping pretty badly; she'd managed to twist her shoulder somehow but is fully recovered now after a couple of weeks.

ooooooh maybe she's jumped off on an angle for some reason? i saw my girl Onyx do this recently my heart went into my mouth LITERALLY! eeeeeek these babies of ours!

sending Jasmine lots of healing wheeeeeeeeeeeks and loves from the girls and some nose rubs from me XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Thank you so much for all the advice, shes holding her foot up when eating as if to take the pressure off but then its not that bad that you can immediately tell when she walks or runs around which foot it is if you know what I mean! Shes def still doing it, I'm so glad people say give it a few days she really doesnt seem off colour at all still hungry as ever and wheeking :)) xx

Hiya, no xray, I guess as shes still quite strong on it? I'm guessing a brake would mean lots of swelling and very poorly, thank goodness shes not like this xx

That would tend to rule out arthritis ...(which can also be diagnosed on x ray.)..as she's still quite young. My 4 year old boar Maple has just been diganosed with it in both hind legs and his front shoulder. It has caused him to put on lots of weight and now he needs to go on a diet!

If her apetite or mobility is reduced then metacam as a painkiller and antinflammatory should tide her over. It might be worth weighing her to see if she puts ON any weight rather than losing it - as that would indicate she is not moving around so well.

Hopefully it should clear up soon.

x

Thanks Pebble. Arthritis is quite prevalent in our family so I'm aware of it as a condition ie xrays showing signs etc, but not in guinea pigs of course :) ooh well I just dont understand their weights, I weight them every week and they go up and down like yo yos! In four months the weights have been the same once for one of them! mind you they got mites (again!) and then jasmine had an abscess and her weight dropped but then returned quickly. She is def still limping today but also racing around the hutch! I have given her loxicom every day since Friday - thats also pain relief and anti-inflam isnt it? I'm really hoping shell be not limping soon, I would say 'better' but she seems fine in herself - they are such a worry! x
Ps bagged hay only from now on and I followed the ivermectin course with gorgeous guinea baths with melts for 2 weeks running and now Ive just used the spot on this morning almost 4 weeks since their last jab just as a precaution...hopefully hopefully they will not get them again. I hope not as I have a new rescue boy that when hes done and the 6weeks has passed he can be introduced to them! :)

Also, poor maple! Its such a painful condition :( (in our family my mum has had her hips done 3 times, both knees done and she not 60 yet and my sister whos just turned 40 needs a hip replacement soon!)

Hope your little guy feels better soon.

I worry about Charlie constantly. He's my baby for sure!

Hi Glynis, Yes possibly not as exaggerated as yesterday and previously...keep thinking her toes are swollen but gingers look the sane! I'm just looking for something thats not there now! :)) thank you for asking x>>

Don't forget that problems can be right up in the should and hip. But by the sound of it, it should be over in a day or two.

Thanks Wiebke :) I had her out earlier and had a good gentle squeeze of her 'armpit' and shoulder etc she didnt pull away or anything still, so hopefully it will get better each day :) thank you
