Hi all. I've got 3 piggies, all rescues who are now indoors. I've noticed the last day or 2 that somepig when they do their crazy wheeking at veggie time, sounds ever so slightly wheezy, although I feel wheezy is too strong a word, its hard to describe :{ I'm not sure who it is but I think it could be my old man Guinness who is 4-5ish. Any ideas? Do you think it is because it has got cold? there is no heating in their room.

Thanks :)

Does it sound like he goes so high pitched that it makes him wheezy? I've a few like this and I put it down to over excitement. :)

It could be :{ TBH it is still difficult to work out who exactly it is as they all get excited at the same time. I'll keep and eye and try and assess it more. I just wanted to check it wasn't a definate sign of a chest problem or anything, as I really don't have much experience with the pigsters :)

Listen to the chest when they are relaxed and quiet. Any noise could indicate a problem. :)

Agree with S&T about listening to the chest. Also see if there is any noise coming from the nose, like a little squeak. It could be the change of temperature from being outside to in.

I've also heard that some older pigs begin to get a little hoarse around wheeking time! Not sure if that's completely accurate, but it's a thought I suppose!

my guinea pig had a chest infection and was ill for ages
one of his symptoms was wheezing
if your guinea pig seems fine in other ways then i'm sure its nothing to worry about
although if he really is wheezing then maybe a vet trip is needed

I agree ... my older piggies, particularly Josie and Shaun do try to wheek but it is a effort and comes out not quite right. They are not chesty or ill in any way whatsever as I would be straight up the vets with them and they don't live together ... they are just a little hoarse, I guess!

My oldest pig used to do this, then he lost his wheek completely and its just a wheeze now bless him. He's a little old man though and i think it's an age thing though some young ones seem to get it too. Unless he's coughing, sneezing or you can here a click from him i wouldnt worry. Check his eyes too, sometimes wheepy eyes are the first sign of a chest infection but i doubt it is :)

Thank you all for replying :) I'm quite sure it is old man Guinness and when he's resting I can hear nothing at all. I haven't noticed any eye problems, but will double check. I don't want him to lose his wheek :(

hmmm...does he do it when you pick him up? is it a kind of croaky sound? My pig has been sounding croaky and I wonder if both have the same thing(whatever that is)

Hi

I wouldn't say croaky and there is no noise at all when I pick him up, it is just when he wheeks excitedly it kind of turns into a wheeze. I hope your little guy is ok :)

I really think its just old man syndrome! funny ive never heard of a girly with it. Dont worry, having no wheek just makes my Ralfie cuter bless him! He still tries his hardest and you do hear him, just sounds like a whisper so you can still tell when he's excited lol!

Was going to ask similar about Captain Jack - he's 5, and he tries to wheek but it's like he's lost his voice, bless him! xx>>> He's not chesty though, so that's good
