I took a wonder in while I was at Fosse Park waiting for my bus home as I love looking at all the animals. I went to the rescue side and there was a lovely lilac boy in there and P@H were actually very honest about him for a change. It stated he had had a skin condition which has been treated by a vet and he has recovered but that is why he is separated. There was nothing saying he couldn't be housed with other piggies and he was adorable. The impressed look on my face soon dropped though as all the rats, hamsters, and piggies in these glass cages looked worn out! Not surprising with the enclosed glass cages and the bright lights in this hot weather. Although they did have almost everything they needed (no toys).

Oh oh and while I was there I saw this little grey syrian hamster that I sooooooooo wanted to bring home... he was obviously male from his bottom as the poor boy was so hot he was swelling down there and pushed the sawdust aside to lie on the metal (I assume it was colder). It reminded me of my first hamster who in the summer used to lie with his man bits hanging out the window of his house when he was hot :))

I think sometimes you have been once or twice and not liked what you have seen and read so many stories that you forget that despite the mass inbreeding etc there are worse places those animals could be. Better places as well but definitely not the worst

That's true - I'm sure the breeding Mill they came from would have been a lot worse. Perhaps that's where they all picked up the Ringworm.

It's not a case of if or not Pet at home House them correctly it's the fact they allow impulse buying and breed to sell, not to mention often sell Ill, sick or pregnant animals without any thought for the animal or it's future home.

There's nothing to stop me tomorrow walking into Pets at Home and buying an animal to feed to a snake or worse still neglect it and torture it daily. The fact is they don't care about the animals, what they do care about is money and well people have animals they need supplies hence the reason they sell them.

It's about the bigger picture..

The Animals - Where they end up and where they start out!

Our pets at home are good most of the time, however me and my mum did have a run in with one of the staff selling three boys and saying there is no chance of them ever falling out, we stepped in saying they will likely fall out but she was insistent. Luckily the people went for two girls instead.
It's some of the people who go in that upsets me as i was in there the other day when these people were looking at this piggie in the adoption centre (who they thought they could have for free) and the guy said "I'd love one of them so i could smack it about" :( I felt sick and begged my mumm to take the piggie but instead we stayed until they left animalless. It was horrible.

The P@H debate continues to be a hot topic on the forum. Whether or not the staff at individual stores take good care of the animals in their store is not the only consideration. It's where the animals they sell come from and their treatment in the production of 'stock' for the stores.

Do you approve of the practices involved in the bulk breeding used to stock a national store? Are you aware of how the animals are bred, housed, shipped and distributed?

What many forum members have come to understand is that by giving your custom you are giving your approval and these practices will continue. As long as people continue to buy their pets/supplies from these stores they will continue to produce animals in this way.

If you choose to fund this type of corporation, that is up to you, but at least make an informed decision by understanding the bigger picture of the pet trade. It's all about the money, your money.

I understand all of that and I did not actually give them any custom, I just went to look at the animals to kill some time. What I was impressed by was the "honesty" of the sign. I've heard of them separating out stock that are ill and selling them as rescues and I thought it was nice of them to be honest for a change. No it doesn't change my opinion on the way they are brought into the world or to the pet shop.

Oops, didn't mean to click on your post to like it - sorry.

It is refreshing to see them being so honest though :)
