Hey all. So Branston has started having small and pointy poos. He is approx 4 years old. Took him off veggies for two days and his poops improved. He also began drinking more water again which he had slowed down on.

The pointy poos have returned. Weight has dropped a tiny bit but I have also decreased his veggies so that could be why. He is eating lots of hay but last night he only ate his lettuce and herbs. Didnt touch his pepper or cucumber.

He’s always been quite fussy and his favourite go to is a mix of lettuce, green pepper, cucumber and herbs. We mix it up with other veggies but sometimes he ignores them. Seems to like those 3 and herbs the most. He also has a probiotic and vitamin c sprinkle on his veggies.

Have taken him off veggies again tonight after him only eating his lettuce last night. He is eating lots of hay and forage but not sure where to go from here. Advice majorly appreciated!

Hi

Please switch from weighing once weekly to weighing daily first thing in the morning on your kitchen scales for best day to day comparison so you can step in with any feeding support when and as much needed. You can never fully control the food intake; especially the hay intake only by eye.

I would also recommend that you do a live microbiome transfer ('Poo soup') if you have another piggy not on antibiotics or opiates in order to help stabilise the gut. It doesn't cost you anything and done correctly is more effectice than any commercial probiotics.

After withrawing any veg, you need to wait at least 2 days until after things have settled down and then restart slowly, with just a little herb on the first day and then gradually adding one more veg with every meal, initially only in a small quantity to allow any disturbed gut microbiome to regrow and adjust.
Please be aware that it takes about a full day for food passing the digestive tract from mouth to the anus, so any poo output is always running behind events and you have to factor that also in when monitoring the reintroduction of veg.

I would recommend that you have your boy vet checked if he continues to have issues or you have any concerns. It can be a yet minor but developing pain/health issue that is behind the erratic eating.

All the best.
