Hi all! Wondering if anyone can help.
One of my girls, Penny, I believe she had cheilitis around her lips (sore crusty scabs) around the beginning of April. A few trips back and fourth to the vet, and a pretty scary experience with some Baytril, my vet advised taking her off the antibiotic altogether as either it or the stress of the syringe when giving her it caused her to stop eating and drinking.
Fast forward a few weeks, the scabs around her lips have pretty much gone, although still a little crusty but they aren’t bothering her or affecting her daily life in any way however, this morning I was weighing her, and while bribing her with some romaine, noticed a small, grey, hard spot on her nose right next to one of her nostrils. Again, like the scabs on her lips, it didn’t seem to bother her, nor was it sore, but it was really quite hard almost like a scab yet grey in colour (she does have black fur and a black/grey nose).
Will upload photos later on.
Thank you, any advice is greatly appreciated and we really don’t want another vet trip, Penny would seriously have a strop with us if we have to take her back this month, again! 😂

Hi!

Has your vet considered that the cheilitis can also be caused by fungal or microbial germ - it very much depends on what gets through the tiny cracks in the skin? In this case, an antibiotic will only temporarily suppress cheilitis, but not heal it.

What is causing your newest scab is impossible to say without a preferably clear and well-lit (daylight) picture.

Hi there! Thanks for getting back to me!
Basically we had a vet who seriously didn’t know what he was doing and just gave us the Baytril, and never mentioned at all that it could actually be cheilitis, I am just going by my own research so I could be totally wrong!
The next vet we had (who is the senior small animal vet and I was really confident in him, he really knew what he was doing and was very, very good) didn’t officially confirm it was cheilitis either just referred to it as ‘scabs’ but his concern was obviously that the Baytril/stress stopped Penny eating so he took her off it straight away.
We went back for a check up in a week as the vet requested and he was pleased that it seemed like her little scabs had started to heal, and they have stayed pretty much the same ever since that appointment around two weeks ago and he was happy enough to leave her off the Baytril.
The grey spot was very hard, at first I actually thought there was something sticking to her wee nose. I hope these “selfies” of my gorgeous girl help! Thanks again for your help 😊

Hi!

Please have it vet checked. It is unfortunately too blurry for me to judge or even make an educated guess, but I would also ask the vet to consider a fungal skin infection.
If you are lucky, it is just from a big sneeze and will come off on its own.

Hello again! Sorry for slow replies we’ve had a busy few days! Thank you again for your advice, will get another vet appointment just to check, I want it nipped in the bud whatever it is!
Started to wonder if it could possibly be if she’s somehow pulled a hair out of her wee nose, or where she’s rubbed her nose on the cage bars where her hay rack is? Hoping it’s just a wee artificial wound and nothing fungal or bacterial spreading because the wee scabs on her mouth were really beginning to heal up!
Thank you again - will update after vet appointment! 😁
