Hi all, I'm not sure if I should be alarmed or not but I found a small orange lump on my guinea pigs skin. Is this normal or not? Thank you.

I wouldnt be too alarmed at this stage, are you sure it isnt just some dried food if it is orange? Perhaps you might try gently wipe the area with some lukewarm water and cotton wool to see if it comes off?

i have lightly scratched it with my nails, its definitly grown from the skin. My guinea pig doesn't seem to mind me touching it so I'm assuming it doesnt hurt.

Ok if its definitely attached to the skin then you should get the vet to take a look at it, just to be on the safe side x

Cool thanks! But any ideas of what it might be?

Unfortunately not; lumps and skin growths are something that really require a hands-on vet examination as there are simply too many possibilities.

The best thing to do is to go to the vet to get a physical hands-on examination. Hopefully on goes well for you

Can some skin growths be not dangerous?

Most are thankfully harmless; but if it is something more serious, then it is better to deal with it early on.

This is for your vet to decide as we can only speculate but cannot diagnose, and only help fanning your concerns (hopefully unfounded) by throwing all kinds of things into the ring that do not necessarily apply. There is a downside to online places and online research; we try to avoid that as we are supportive forum.

An appointment is not urgent; you can make it at your convenience during regular opening hours but every lump or skin growth should be vet checked to see whether it can be left for monitoring, should be vet checked regularly or needs removing. ;)
