Small Poops. Worried.

hi all, don’t think I have posted here before. One of my pigs is a runt called Freddie. I think he is just over a year old. For the past few days I have been noticing his poops are smaller and sometimes pointed on the end. He is eating and behaving as normal. He is not squeaking when he poops and his weight hasn’t gone down. The small poops only seem to be there in the morning but then I’m not sure if he’s pooping less because he lives with another pig who can poop for Britain! I’ve been giving him cucumber by hand for 3 days which he eats happily. We have a vet visit lined up today which my hubby thinks is an over reaction as I do worry chronically about everything. Is this common and easily treatable?
 
It's always a good idea to check with a vet.
They would much rather see an anxious owner with noting to worry about than one who leaves it too late.

Hi! A vet check is not a bad thing. Please keep in mind that 80% of the food intake should be hay, and that you can only control that by weighing regularly at the same time in the daily cycle (i.e before serving breakfast or dinner) in order to minimise the weight variance between a full belly and bladder and an empty one, which can make up to 40g over the course of a day. We generally recommend to see a vet if your piggy has lost 50g or more in the matter of a day or a few days.

By weighing a healthy piggy weekly and a piggy you are worried about daily you have got a more objective measurement. If you have anxiety issues, please ask your husband to weigh for you; weighing can become easily an obsessive habit.

The poo output generally reflects what has gone in a day or two before as guinea pigs have to digest everything twice.
 
Thanks both. He went to the vet and she examined him thoroughly and said he is well looked after and happy. She said to weigh him daily and continue doing what I’m doing but that there is nothing to be concerned about. Since then I have checked his poops and they are back to normal! Maybe he fancied giving me a fright! Ratbag

You are not the only one who has taken a guinea pig to the vet anxious about something only to find nothing wrong.
Their goal in life is to age us rapidly.
