My 3 year old GP Edgar started off with what I first thought were hiccups last week. He has been eating, but only a very small amount and has not been himself at all. he hardly comes out his bed and hasn't wheeked at feeding time like he normally does.
I took him to the vets yesterday who checked his teeth and weighed him and couldn't find anything wrong, but gave me some painkillers and baytril x2 daily and I'm also giving him the light cranberry juice incase it was a UTI (he didn't have any blood in his wee so far) this morning I checked on him, and he had eaten a little bit of cucumber. His poos were really small-almost half the size as normal and quite shiney looking. I've obviously been trying to keep his fluids up, but is the small size of them indicative of anything, and is it cause for concern?Would be greatful for any advice!

Time to get hand feeding. His intake is too low. Syringe pellet slurry into him starting now and get a second opinion on his teeth.

Vets usually struggle to find anything wrong in my opinion - usually because the things which are wrong can't easily be seen.

Answers to 'how' are on this forum!

It does sound like the reduced appetite is affecting the poops, fewer/smaller poops indicates not enough food going in.

One suggestion I would have, worth trying, is Daktarin Oral Gel. If he's not eating and his teeth (molars included) seem to be normal, then treating for an oral fungal infection is the next step, it seems to be common at this time of year.
Dosage for an adult pig is 0.5ml three times daily, reduced to twice daily on week two and once daily on week three.

Smallpoos = not eating. Hiccoughs sounds like food getting stuck First thought is a teeth problem and in the meantime you need to syringe feed urgently with both mushed pellets or critical care and also fluids to keep his system moving and hydrated.

When I lived in Farnham I took my pigs to Shortheath Veterinary Surgery - they won't do dental without anaesthetic - but unlike my experience with other vets, none of my pigs had problems recovering from anaesthetics or having their teeth cut too short. Also their surgical technique was excellent on a couple of my piggies who had bad abcesses in the mouth area.

They are part of Waverley vets and have several surgeries around the area...but Shortheath was my preference

Thanks for all the advice, I have been following it as much as possible, and he seems to be perking up. I've been syringing his medication, but he HATED the syringe full of mushed pellets-so he just nudged me out of the way and stuck his head in the bowl and started eating from that instead! i was so happy. So he's had quite a few mouthfuls of mashed pellets, and has ventured out of his bed more often and even helped himself to his water bottle unprompted a couple of times. I've still been giving him cranberry juice, and his poo is still small, but he seems perkier in himself. I go on holiday on sunday and my friend is looking after him, so i'm starting to feel a bit reassured now.
