Our boys both seem to have a small raised scab in the middle of their backs and they are biting/scratching more than usual.
They’ve had a mite treatment (ivermectin) , and I can’t see any visible mites on them.
Checking around where they are biting, I can’t see anything, maybe just some dandruff.
Perfectly fine in themselves. Eating fine etc.
The scab itself is small, maybe 1cm around. They are fine with it being touched and doesn’t appear to have bled.

Attached a pic (hard to get a clear one!)

Ringworm? Fungal? Mites? Any ideas? Can it be treated at home with something over the counter?

Thanks

You said they have had ivermectin - was it a complete treatment of three separate doses with two weeks between each treatment (to catch the full life cycle of mites given treatment does not kill the eggs and those eggs will hatch and perpetuate the infestation), dosed by weight and prescribed by a vet?

Please don’t be tempted to use pet shop parasite products or home treatments. Home treatments aren’t recommended as you don’t know what you are treating and pet shop parasite treatments are too low dosed with ivermectin to be properly effective - they can suppress but often the owner sees the parasites return due to it not being strong enough to cure.

Mites are not visible to the human eye, so you will not be able to see them on them.
Only lice are visible - pale crawling creatures.

Mites and fungal can look the same to begin with (fungal then forms crusts) but we can’t guess which one you may be dealing with. Ivermectin won’t treat fungal but also, if as explained above, if the ivermectin dosage wasn’t right or not the proper length course then it won’t necessarily treat mites properly either.

If you haven’t already, please do see a vet to get a diagnosis and the correct treatment.

Agreed - best to get a vet to check this out and prescribe the right treatment... Often the over the counter stuff isn't enough.
