Hi everyone, I’m new to the forum and I’ve signed up basically just for one reason.
I’ve got two piggies, Picasso who’s 2 years old and Dai who’s just 5 months old and is a rescue.
The cage I usually have them in is big enough (it was designed to hold five piggies) but I’m moving and I had to set up their travel cage.
The problem is, Picasso wasn’t meant to have a partner due to his very aggressive behavior (I had to keep him alone in a separate environment when I had a more numerous number of piggies but he seems to get along quite well with Dai) so the travel cage I had should be for one pig only. Now that I’ve rescued Dai (he used to live in very bad conditions, his plastic cage had no bedding and he’s a sheltie so his fur is quite long and was very dirty and messy when I got him, plus he had no hay and only ate pellet) I can see that the cage is too small for the both of them. They’ll have to stay in there for a couple weeks, no more, I’ll settle their real cage as soon as I can but meanwhile I need some advice, how can I make it less stressful for them? Do I need to change anything in the settling? I’ll attach a picture. Please remember that it’s an emergency, I would never keep them there otherwise. Thanks for your time <3

As you can see the cage has fleece bedding on the top, where the house is, I still have to put the other fleece blanket you can see on top of the cage inside, I was washing it when I took the pic, and pellet bedding in the lower part because they really like it and I think it helps Dai keep his fur clean,
They have two little bowls for their pellet and a big one for the veggies, two bottles of water and a big hay rack with a litter box underneath.
The cage is 55x100 cmq plus the 55x20 cmq area where I keep the house (I didn’t put it in the lower part because I think like this they’ve more space to run around). There’s no ladder because they weren’t using it and it took up space.

Hello! Welcome to the forum! I really hope you enjoy spending time on the forum here, it is lovely to have you join us.

I am pleased you have managed to find a friend for Picasso

The cage really is too small for two pigs especially boars and especially one that may not normally tolerate other boars..

A cage for two pigs should be 120cm min...

Is there anyway you could created a large run on the floor to keep them in until you get a new cage?

Could you add your location to your profile as it helps us tailor any advice if ever needed to your geographical location

Welcome again
Lee

I’m gonna add my location, sorry for that ;)
I’m from Rome, Italy and currently using your forum because we don’t have active Italian ones (guinea pigs aren’t too common as pets here).
I have some grids I could use but my bedding would end up all over the room. I’ve probably put them in a box somewhere so I might as well need to search for them. Maybe I could keep the piggies there in the daytime, so they could stay a bit more comfortable, and put them in the cage at night or when I’m not watching over them.
I also thought about giving them some free run time but only Picasso is already used to it, and there are some exposed wires that could be dangerous for them.
Even if it’s just a short period of time I feel really bad about keeping them in such a tiny space. Then yes, Picasso used to live on its own for the past 10 months (which is a looot) and I wanted to take the house out of the cage, but without hideouts they could get stressed. I really don’t know what to do D:
Anyway they don’t seem stressed yet, they’re eating and drinking normally, haven’t fought and are quite relaxed when I go into their room. They’re afraid of the drill so I’m trying to limit the drilling in the morning
Sorry my long long messages ahahah

Don't apologise, it just lets us tailor advice geographically

@rome_italy is another of our Italian members :)

They need houses in the cage as they are prey animals they like to hide... so don't take the house out

We keep our piggies on fleece and grids around them 2x4 grid area would be fine for them

It's super difficult, the main risk is if they fall out in such close quarters. I'd suggest taking the house out and putting a towel or something over half the cage to simulate a big house so they feel safe. It's not ideal as they need houses but it could work as a temporary measure to give them more space? Especially if there's only one house as they could argue over it.

Could you set it up by keeping the cage on the floor, open but with a run attached so they can't get out but have more space?

If your Picasso is a bit of a grump he could fall out with Dai even in a short period of time so it's hard to say how it'll go.

Do you have free sites over there? There may be a way of getting a free or cheap cage that might be a bit bigger, or a way of adding it onto the existing cage?

WOW! :wel:
from Rome? me, too! and I understand the reason why you have signed here... it is better to stay quite far from the info of our "experienced" compatriots...
If you don't mind I would like to send you a private message, just for some chat (maybe we live near?). I have three piggies, two sows adopted from "Follow the Bunny" (in Bologna) and another male piggie adopted from "Mondo Carota", maybe you know these groups.
I had to build an extension for the cage because it did not look comfortable with the third piggie. As my living room is not large I added a foldable pen bought on Zooplus and I made a large window on the wall of the cage...

if I need room, I can fold it and remove everything in just one minute.
This might be a good solution for you, you can even use another barrier for separating the two piggies

If you need, I can lend you this wooden fence (I have two), which can be used for letting the piggies move around a side of a room:

Uhh I hadn’t thought about creating a hideout using fleece, it’s a fairly nice idea, I could even find a way to block an extra towel on the top of the cage, to make them feel less exposed and a bit more comfortable, I’ll definitely try that ;)
I spent a couple hours searching for the grids I had stored in a box that I had left in the garage and I finally managed to set everything up. Now they have some more space but I can’t let them on their own because of my sister’s dog (she’s here to help me and will stay for the next four days, but after that I’ll let my boys run out of the cage whenever they want :D )
Thank you for the help
