Hi,
I have just bathed my boar and was in the process of brushing and trimming his fur when I saw a very small white worm looking thing. I tried to pick it out but couldn't manage. I can't see it anymore and I have had a good look through his fur and can't see any more or any on my other pig. I will be booking him and my other pig in with the vets first thing tomorrow but if any one has any idea of what it may be I would appreciate it.

Was it wriggling? where was it - could have been a sperm rod -( you can google for a picture) worms are very rare in guinea pigs - but that is not to say they cant get them - but it is more likely that they can catch them if they are put out on the grass - a dose of ivermectin or panacur from the vets tends to kill parasites.

Yes. It was wriggling and on the top of his head. I've just googled sperm rods and what I saw was smaller I think. I really can't find it again though.

Let us know what the vet says, it's only the blue bottles that cause, & it can happen in or out. It's probably not so don't worry, just ask the vet, she will reassure you.

My other half managed to get a better look. Found 2. They are just behind his ear and are tidy, very close to the fur. I'm just worried if I can't get him in tomorrow. I know how quickly they can deteriorate He seems happy at the moment.

Have you checked the skin and especially around the bum area to make sure that it is not fly strike? If it is, it is an absolute emergency.
Fly Strike

In any way, I would recommend to completely and thoroughly deep clean the whole cage and give your piggies a good bath as soon as they have been seen by a vet.

Fly strike maggots are larger. Perhaps a fly has laid some eggs in his fur, but not in his skin?

Well hopefully the vet can get us in tomorrow. Hopefully it's just mites or something. I'll let you all know how we get on Thank you all.

Vet didn't seem too concerned. She couldn't see anything when she looked, but said they both appeared healthy/good weight and has just given me some spot on treatment. Exam FOC flea check and xano spot on to collect tomorrow.

Thanks for all the advice.
