Obvious one being regular cleaning & such like & from what i;ve read if it does niff a bit normal canister etc airfreshners not a good plan for the piggies health so are there any good devices for allegedly freshening houses which are guinea friendly, like plugs ins or such like?

Hi Si,

Plug ins are essentially air freshener so they are no good. I think it was Becca on here who said about putting some essential oils on your lightbulb and the heat from it will warm the oil up producing a smell. I use Lavander and it does work, I like Lavander it keeps me calm...lol

I have 4 boars in a small room and they do whiff even though I clean them out every other day. I'm hoping when I move my girls into the hutch and mov 2 boars into the living room it won't be as bad! I'll probably have to change the boys everyday though as i am housing them on fleece.

open the windows a lot :D the lavender thing works, not sure if it would suit your bachelor lifestyle to have lavender wafting around, but better that than pig smell ;D

My three are on fleece (with newspaper underneath) and I clean them out every day. I change the fleece and remove any wet newspaper. It only takes about 10 minutes so isn't a huge chore. When I say 10 minutes, I'm not including the time I spend playing with the pigs or talking to them in a stupid voice.....anyhow, back to the point.... I find there isn't a problem with a wee/nasty odour, just sometimes a 'guinea pig smell' and this is normally in the morning when there is a day's build up of wee/veg/hay etc. They are also in the 'dining room' where there isn't much other house traffic or smells created, but in a normal living room, I'd imagine the air moves a bit more!

It wasnt me that said about the lavender, but I think it is a fab idea! Dont know if the scent of lavender would suit a bachelor pad though! Might need something a bit more manly! :D

lol dont worry i'm in touch with my feminine side....lol.

So are burnign oils, lavendar etc OK then as to go back to eg of plug in i have already it's just a cheap thing from asda which just heats up oil & gives off scent, or full on oil burners alternative OK or best avoided?
Si

I'd say the choice is yours but if you do opt for the oil burning solution then be careful not to make it too strong as piggies do have very powerful noses and they may not like the smell!

I wouldnt use any type of air freshner or burn oils, if they are too strong they get down my throat - imagine what they would do to the piggies?

Just use white vinegar when you clean the cage which should remove smells.

I have 4 boys in a studio flat which I clean out every night and change top layer of paper every morning - prevention is much better than trying to cure!

I dis-infect my cage every time I clean it out - which helps a lot. My guinea pigs cage is in the livingroom so I have to make sure it doesn't smell. There's a window above their cage so I make sure there's always a vase of flowers - not sure if you would want that in your batchelor pad though! I would love any tips on how to give the bottom of the cage a right good clean - I've got a Nero 3 and the bottom is really stained and really difficult to clean. Any tips anyone?
