Hi

One of our piggies stinks. We bath him and then the next day he smells again. Don't know what he does! They are cleaned out regulary. They are now on vet bed and so get swept out each day. Currently we use baby shampoo to bath them, however does anyone have any ideas? Or does anyone else have a smelly piggie and have any advice.

Many thanks

Sarah :)

I don't know personally sorry, but there have been a few people on here who say that boars are more smelly than sows by nature. I'm sure someone will be along soon who can help you more :)

The only thing i can suggest is that you check his grease gland on his bum as it can get quite smelly.

But baby shampoo is formulated for babies (humans), why not get some guinea pig shampoo?
And clean the grease glad regularly

I would never use baby shampoo (refraining from using a brand name here ;D) on my babies as it can cause so many skin problems (same with the baby bath etc..) It just isn't as mild for babies skin as they would have you believe. For that reason I wouldn't use it on my guines pigs either.

Completely agree with all the above. www.gorgeousguineas.com for the best shampoo!

We water it down, I can't remember where but I'm sure I read somewhere that recommended it. But I will take a look at the website suggested.

We do check the glads etc.. it's just the other two boys we have don't smell any where near as bad!

Maybe he has a urine infection OR another boy is spraying him both are pretty putrid smells! Maybe a trip to the vets to rule out urine infection first.

Did you know that alot of baby products have a local anaesthic in which dentists use to numb your gums when you have a filling ! Its all true and a certain baby product brand is actually band in austraila because of it :)

I find that my boar Toby smells a bit more than my other boar Max. Not sure why, they were both bathed not that long ago (grease glands cleaned). Think perhaps it is down to the individual pigs scent?!

my boys smell more than my 5 girls put together..i bath them, they scent and make themselves all boarish again so they smell..one continuous circle! lol

I agree with the above comments too. I can highly recommend Gorgeous Guinea products, I have several piggies that visit me from time to time just to have a bath in them!

As someone has already mentioned, it could be a urine infection... It is absolutely the worst smell on earth when they have an infection. If he really does stink then take him to the vet just to rule out this possibility. Or, he could be being sprayed by a more dominant fella which can also cause a stink. He shouldn't naturally smell so bad as they are quite clean and odourless animals.
