Hello all, I would love some advice please (we will of course we speaking to the vet tomorrow for their opinion). We neutered our 8 month old boars on Wednesday and since then they have had a very pungent smell (our girls describe it as a farmyard smell). Their wounds are healing well so I am presuming they are not infected. Has anyone experienced this before? we are desperately hoping this isn't their new 'normal' smell! They are eating and drinking well but they are quite fractious with each other. Thank you and I hope you're having a lovely Sunday :-)

Hi!

Good that you have them seen! A stale urine smell could point towards an infection in the urinary tract or something stuck in their not yet contracted anal sacs which will shrink back over the coming weeks in the wake of the removal of the testicles.

Neutered boars should be overall a bit less smelly than full boars although they can still generate intense testosterone clouds and very smelly testosterone laden pee whenever they are excited.

Thank you Wiebke, that's really helpful.

Interesting you posted this - we've had the same issue since our boar returned from the vet yesterday (good exotics vet). Since we took him out his carrier the strong 'farm' smell had been there. Seemed a bit soon to be an infection and obviously I will follow up, but wondered what happened with your piggie?

I’m afraid you’re not likely to get a response as the poster hasn’t been on since they last posted you’re better off starting your own thread and getting your boy seen by a vet. Good luck 😊

Thanks - yes it was the only mention I could find on the Internet but was some time ago! It seems to be resolving itself (and vet not concerned) but was really strange. 🤷‍♀️
