Dannii.

Hi everyone,
My piggies have really started to smell bad lately.
I only cleaned their cage two days ago and i can smell their urine immediately once anybody enters my room its becoming unbearable to take it.
Ive changed their bedding over to fleece, due to the carefresh bedding costing me over £9.00 a week for 2 cages!

Has anybody else experienced this problem with their piggies when using fleece as a bedding?

I keep my piggies indoors at the moment due to it being so cold.

Which cheaper safe alternative bedding could i use for my piggies?

Also when i pick the piggies out of the cage i can smell the urine on them, i dont want to bath them too often is there anything i could possibly do to help keep the smell down on them?

Thankyou in advance :)

Hi!
I use a combination of vetbed over newspaper and in a sectoned off area, aubiose and hay over newspaper. My pigs rarely ever smell. I clean the wee areas daily, remove hay and give fresh daily, sweep poops up from the vetbed etc. My cages are large c & c`s. If your piggies are in a small cage and are in it all the time, it will smell more with 2 adult pigs peeing all the time.
Aubiose is £7.99 for a huge 20kg bag, so much better value than carefresh. If you go for fleece or vetbed, you will need at least 2-one for cage and one in the wash :)

You don't use fabric conditioner on your fleece do you? This stops urine being wicked away.

I too have my piggies on fleece with towel underneath & clean every 3rd/4th day but they don't smell.

For alternative beddings have a look at the top of here at the reviews http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=9

To rid them of the urine smell you could wipe them over with a baby wipe or a cloth dampened with warm water, nothing added to it :)

I use vet bed for my piggies. I too use newspaper underneath which is changed DAILY, along with sweeping off poos and hay. And I wash the vet bed every 3 days.

If it is left any longer, it does start to whiff abit, but not if all the above has been done. I hope that helps x

Thankyou for your great replies!

I'm thinking of not using the fleece anymore due to my piggies weeing all over it, ive brought them litter bowls however most of them dont appear to wee in them unfortunately they prefer weeing on the fleece.

I didnt have an issue with the smell when using carefresh bedding its just the cost of it unfortunately being as expenisive as it is.

If i was to use Aubiose does this absorb the smell better than fleece?

Thanks everyone :)

I'm having a similar problem,
I used to use sawdust in their cage but converted to vetbed 2 weeks ago, and for some reason the whole cages stinks and is SODDEN more than before. I do put newspaper under the vetbed! Could it be "cheap" vetbed, I got it from EBay and I like how much cleaner is looks but the smell is awful, it reminds me of a pig sty (literally!)
Can someone pls give me some advice. Thanks

I have been using Vetbed since November and never had that problem i use old towels underneath the Vetbed spot clean twice a day and complete change every 3rd day. I used to use Megazorb but it was getting too expensive and as my piggys are in my living room i got sick of getting bits of it between my toes lol and more of their food was wasted than eaten as it got covered in Megazorb.

have you washe dthe vet bed yet...

i have used vetbeds for years and had no problem with urine smells....or anything like that. the urine should soak through to the newspaper underneath and the vet beds will stay dry. i only wash mine on sundays and they are still dry then however i have a large area for just 2 piggies. a 3ft double storey hutch plus a 3ft x 4 ft run attached to/it probably be able to get loads more in :)

this is a few years old as my 2 girls are in the photo.... but i still have it and still looks the same just different garage :)

I've not heard of Vetbed before, is this to use instead of the usual woodshaving type bedding? My pigs are indoor pigs and tend to throw their bedding all over the room! lol So this could be an alternative idea for me to keep them a little more tidy.

vetbed is the best. throw it in the hutch then when it needs cleaning, brush it thoroughly and stick in washing machine. take about 30 mins in tumble dryer to dry or on a warm day about an hour. the cost at first is expensive BUT you save money in the long run. i have been using mine since about 2004/2005 and still use the same ones. Vets use it for all animals even dogs.

Hello, have just been on the aubiose website- can anyone tell me if their complete guinea pig food is any good?

Thanks

thanks for this reading this info has really helpt I use vet bed and have two boars on it (the smellist type) and yesterday I came in after only two days the whole living room stunk! I do not use the newspaper underneath but do clean up the poos daily. I will start with the newspaper and change daily and hope it helps :)
