Hello! Their cage is clean, but the piggy smell won't disappear no matter what I try so it sort of travels around the house. I'd like to find an alternative to ripping up the carpet (which I would have to do for it to go right now) and other things, so am interested in room sprays that are safe/natural for guinea pigs. Thanks :)
 
Hmm the only thing I can suggest is getting the carpet cleaned and not letting the piggies run around on it, maybe buy something waterproof you can cover the floor with. Sadly fragrances aren't very good for piggies from what I've read, hence using fragrance free wash liquid/powder to wash their bedding/liners.

Lol I did say I hope you have some carpet cleaner XD

Someone else might have an idea that might help.
 
hehe :) I have no idea personally because when mine ran around the floor it was laminate so easier to clean, we've not let them out here because we've no flooring as yet but when we have carpets down I'm planning on getting something waterproof and putting that down when the piggies are out OR just block gaps off in the kitchen and let them run around in there with it have kitchen tiles :)

I hope you find something that helps so you don't have to pull the carpet up :)

Hmm what about actually having kitchen floor tiles? I think the one I want is ceramic, but I'm not sure. The ones in my kitchen are great and I find it super easy to clear up piggies mess. They mainly go on newspaper so I won't be going left and right to clean up messes too.
 
When we had carpet in the piggy room I used old bath mats to cover their favourite areas over. Now we have a wood floor and I put duvet covers down to stop them slipping and to soak up any wee. Carpet just gets soaked!
 
My boys freerange in the lounge on carpet. I felt like the place stank last year and couldn't understand why it wouldn't go even with multiple clean outs. I then remembered I had a still-boxed carpet cleaner in the loft. I got it down and cleaned the carpet and BINGO! Stinky pig smells went away! I now use the cleaner every couple of months. Just make sure you have puppy pads or something similar in any corners they may piddle on! The smell is probably a built up or piggy tummy smell rather than anything worse (at least that's what I keep telling myself)!
 
I carnt say l can smell mine , but l do have the pig room windows open most of the time, but thats to make sure there is no damp air to upset there breathing .
 
Thanks :) Though I'm getting a ton of wasps and I found a spider making a nest between my window and the crack after leaving it open all day, so I'm not sure.
 
might be worth trying sprinkling a couple of tubs of bicarbonate of soda on the carpet &leave for an hour or so, then vacuum it up again (same as shake &vac)
It has no perfume &absorbs odours plus its only £2 or so a tub if that. Can't remember the last time I bought any.
But I did have a little dish/container in the fridge to absorb odours when I had a smelly onion &fishy fridge. Seemed to do the trick.
If not the carpet washer sounds a good idea. I did my whole home carpets when I moved in. Think it was called " triple A shampoo" smells quite nice :)

Got rid of the doggy & lavender smell that it wreaked of before I got in there. Xx

not really sure. My mum used to use it at home when the dog would sometimes lie on it &it didnt do him any harm but I'd be afraid of causing respiratory problems with piggies because of the perfume used as it always smells quite strong.
But the powder Is vacuumed up so there shouldn't be any dust as such.
Still dont think I would risk it though.

Just looked at bicarbonate of soda in asda 200g tub for £1 on offer /rollback at the moment :)

that was goingt o be my suggestion too :)
 
i was going to suggest bicarb aswell to clean the carpet (it can give you a little shock when you hoover it up though!) and for odours in the air, leave small pots of either bicarb or white vinegar in the room which will absorb smells and is safe for the piggies too :)

eta: for floor time, put down something to protect the carpet like tarpaulin. i got a 6ftx4ft sheet of it today off ebay for £1.69! also have a waterproof picnic blanket aswell currently which works well with a fleece over the top :)
 
I swear by bicarb sprinkled over and hoovered up! I also use fleece on top of some pvc table cloth and puppy pads under the fleece in areas where they particularly like to toilet when out at floor time :D
 
Vereon S sanatizing tablets , add 1 to make 500lm of vet recomended sanatizing fluid
it works out to 1p per 500ml none toxic and used widly in kennsls and catteries

ideal for prewashing vet bed and fleeces
