smokey wood shavings?

sorry for all my posts recently, my anxiety has really flared getting my girls back into a different set up!

iv just made the hutch up but the shavings have a sort of ‘smokey’ aroma to them, iv read it can just be from the ‘producing’ of the shavings in the machine but i just wanted to double check this is some what normal?

I would throw them out and get a new bag if you can. They probably aren't poisonous, but unpleasant and might be slightly toxic. I use woodshavings going through a 3kg bag each week and I have never had ones that smelt burnt, they definitely shouldn't smell like that. Which brand are they? Hopefully you can get your money refunded

I'm stressing.. no where is open now its 4 oclock and I'm getting the girls back tonight!

its a huge bale of ‘littlemax’ shavings, literally bought yesterday and checked all okay on here but now iv got them out all i can smell is this smokey like smell

Yuk, it will probably be OK for tonight, perhaps with a fleece blanket over it. It sounds unpleasant and what is unpleasant for us is usually unpleasant for piggies, but they should be OK. Can you take the shavings outside to off gas for a bit?

I’d probably not worry about it. It’s not going to be toxic, probably just a smell from production.

You could decent some into a bucket and leave them there for a few days (turning them often) and then use the batch from the bucket for clean out time once they’ve aired out for a few days

its not a horrible smell but i just really worry. i would have if it wasn’t raining haha bloody typical!

luckily the boarders I'm collecting the girls from have a spare bag of megazorb I'm going to buy and use as i know this is safe and i won’t be questioning it.. your probably right however i just really struggle to reasure myself. iv bagged it up and will try to re-sell on facebook, then purchase the snowflake softchip and get it delivered and hopefully things will just go smoothly from here! x

thankyou! i did read this, i think it smells quite natural which made me feel better for sure!
