Well- My bad luck continues with poorly pigs :( so i was wondering if i could get some advice before i go to the vets again.

I took Smudge Pig to the vets for an eye problem (i have only had her a week) and she had crusty eyes that were looking sore, I thought it was conjunctivitis (and i was right!) and while we were there she got weighed and she was 250g and meant to be 9 weeks old! (the one time my scales are broken and i can't weight the pigs!) The vet started asking me a lot of questions about where i got her, how old she was meant to be, was the person experienced who sold her to me and all things like that, and then the vet gave me some baytril to give her 0.1ml for 6 days and said go back in a week if she didn't gain any weight, got worse or lost weight. So i been lookin after her closely and she doesnt eat that much really. But last night she went from her scatty ways of not being able to touch her to really quiet and dosile :( this morning she has only perked up a little :( she was meant to 'replace' my one that died after a week! (Pets at homes words not mine)

So i got an appointment with the vets and i put her out in the run for half an hour with her friends to cheer her up- and all of a sudden she starts pop corning and running around and eatting grass! So i put her back in the cage after half hour (as its hot in my garden) and as soon as shes back in the cage (with another guinea pig) she goes all quiet again- not eatting, not drinking and lying down alot)

Her body feels really hot- it was hot this morning before she went out and she is in a well ventilated room with all the windows open and covered with see through blinds to keep flies out. In a shady part of the room.

So i wanted to ask if guinea pigs could get fevers?

Snow white and snow drop have also got conjunctivis which they caught off Smudge Pig but they seem fine in themselves- still scoffing- lying down alot but i think its because they are so hot.

Please help me :(

Is she in any pain at all, I had one from pets at home not so long ago that passed away after four days of having her and she was painful around her abdomen. I wondered since whether I lost her due to bloat, but I had her checked over by a vet that said that her stomach was soft. She was only a tiny guinea pig and I suspect that she was around three weeks of age when pets at home aquired her. Hope someone on here can help you more, as the symptoms don't sound like anything that I have come across. Sounds to me as if pets at home are buying their stock in at a very young age.:(

Been to the vets- said her stomach felt doughy- has gained weight since 2 days ago which is good but he thinks she has digestive problems :s so i am having to syringe feed her until tomorrow and if she is still ill back she goes!- I might just say to leave her in for obs if she has to go back- poor piggie backwards and forwards- not fair on her especially in this heat :(

I said that to the manager of the store i got her from- i told him (well more like shouted at him) when he was trying to make out that i didn't know what i was talking about and that 250g was an acceptable weight!

Told him to report the supplier or i would.

I wish you the best with the poor mite. Guinea pigs can have fever and can get overheated.

You can cool down a feverish piggy by gently wiping her with a damp cloth, but make sure that it is not too cool, as you do not want to give it a body shock. Make sure that any piggy outside in this hot weather is shaded by a dampened sheet or beach towel.

The guinea pig that I had from them was only 85gms tops, so not very old at all I don't think, I was led to believe that they were eight weeks old. We had another from a different place the following week and was told that that one was six weeks old. So what age must they be taking them from mum!:(

i went into pets at home today they had about 8 guinea pigs in that were tiny. i asked how old they were they said 8 weeks old, theres no way they were because mine were 10 week when i got them and they were HUGE compared to them. They were really really tiny.

I felt a bit sad really x

Smudge piggie is inside so i can watch her :) I am syringe feeding her til tomorrow and see how she is.

I know there is a shortage of pigs because of that breeding farm fire- but the breeders they get the pigs off shouldn't give them away early! Its wrong.

i was wondering if i could report them to the RSPCA but not sure if they can do anything.

oh yeah i forgot to add- the manager told me you shouldn't put a guinea pig out until they are 5-6 months old- well i have NEVER been told that ever when i have bought a guinea pig off them.

Anyone else been told this?

smudge pig been the vets again this morning- had another injection poor baby :( but stomach not as bloated as yesterday :) so gotta keep syringe feeding her until shes better xx
