Hello. I am in panic mode right now. We had a huge snake in our backyard yesterday. We live right next to woods. I keep my guinea pigs in our walkout basement. I am terrified a snake is going to get in now. My cages are huge! I thought about trying to cover them in snake fencing, but it would cost a fortune. I don't trust repellent. Looking for any advice please. I am thinking of maybe just fencing around all of my cages? I don't know. Ugh.

The only way to keep your guineas fully snake proof is keeping them indoors. Or if that cannot be done you MUST use snake/rodent proof wire, on, around and under your cage. A snake can get in the smallest of gaps.
Snake repellent is useless and will not stop a snake. Nothing will stop a snake except a snake proof cage.

My piggies are indoors in a walkout basement. I have decided to move them to the second floor of our house to be safe into our guest room. I can't stop worrying. I am cleaning out our guest room this weekend and stacking their cages. Thank you so much 💓

Sorry if I'm a little late to this thread and your situation. However, as someone who lives in Colorado, where there are pretty large snakes, keeps their guinea pigs in the basement, has a huge cage, and keeps their piggies indoors, I’m glad I got mentioned. I've got a pretty similar situation.

I'm a person who would just pick a snake up if I saw one (🫣), I haven’t really put any thought into this until now, since it’s not really one of my priorities, but here are some things that I have thought of. It definitely makes sense though and I agree with making their cage area safer and more snake-proof.

If your guinea pigs live indoors, then I doubt a snake would make it into your house without you knowing(obviously could happen though). Definitely keep the door to the basement closed but you could install a door sweep or even weather stripping if it's not the sliding type door.

If there are any gaps in the foundation, door, or windows seal them up also.

Maybe some mesh over vents or drains? Snakes can get into pencil-sized holes. I’m nowhere near sure if those types of snakes have rodents in their appetite though.

You could also elevate the cages with a table or purchase some C&C grids to make a base with.

I agree with you as well on the snake repellent. It could be harmful to the piggies.

You seem to care very much about your piggies so I hope some of that helps. Let us know how it goes with moving them upstairs if that’s the final plan.

I will note that a stacked cage is harder to clean.

Thank you so much. I would rather move them upstairs. The room will be a little tight so I can keep their cages sizes large still, but I think it will be fine stacking the cages. The temperature will be better upstairs. The laundry room is right next door to it. No more lugging loads of laundry up and down 2 flights of stairs anymore. The only drawback is they will be on carpet, but they will be safe and my mind will be at ease. My next day off is Saturday. I am hosting a baby shower Saturday, but right after I getting to work to move them upstairs. I can't wait!

It's nicer for the piggies too, they love being where they can watch the goings on and take an active interest in people ❤️
