My pig has lost one of his teeth and his other is hanging. Is this OK or is it bad?

How did he manage that?
Goodness - poor piggie.
I think it depends a bit on what teeth he has lost, but if he has lost (for example) both top teeth, then he won't be able to eat properly.
I would suggest taking him to a vet asap to have him checked over, and for advice on how to manage the situation.

Hi! Please have the teeth checked by a vet to see whether the root is affected or not (especially with the loose tooth) and if necessary, get a bit of painkiller for the first few days. If it isn't, the teeth will grow back again fairly quickly and should ideally go back to it old self-sharpening balance against the opposite pair of front teeth.

What your boy can't at the moment is to pick up food. Please mush up the pellets and feed more, as hay (which should make up to 80% of the daily food intake) can also be a problem. Grate veg, and if necessary place it in the mouth at first if picking up is a real problem. Things should regulate themselves within a week or 10 days.
If you are worried about the food intake, please weigh your boy daily at the same time in the feeding cycle instead of the normal weekly weigh-in. Offer additional syringe or spoon feed if the weight is falling below 30-50g in 24 hours.

Having got a piggy that's just under gone a dental - had her front teeth filed - I strongly suggest grinding your guinea's nuggets (I used a pestle and mortar) and chopping their veg small enough for them to pick up and eat without having to use front teeth, and getting on the phone to your vet asap.

  1. We did take him to the vet, following your advice. Thank you!
