My piggy is 3 years old. She had pneumonia before a year ago. When she had it you could hear her breathing loudly. Her breathing sounds good and I can’t hear any rattling. She seems to go through cycles of sneezing more and then being normal or sneezing less. Her discharge is clear, if there’s any, and her appetite and behavior is normal. I don’t know if it’s an allergy or something or if there’s something I can give her to help with respiratory issues that isn’t as significant as antibiotics. Her cage mate 100% fine and doesn’t sneeze more than a guinea pig ever should. She also had a very mild case of pneumonia when the other one did. I clean their cage at least once a week and they have just moved into a much larger cage which I had hoped would help but things are still the way they were. She does dig around in her food and hay. Any knowledge or advice to be very very much appreciated!

Sometimes it can be the type of hay or dust. Though if any of mine were sneezing more than normal, I would definitely book a vet check, as respiratory issues can quickly become more serious. Well worth a vet trip to rule out any respiratory problems (and help put your mind at ease - these piggies do have a habit of causing lots of worry). Hope your girl is ok 💕

Sneezing can sometimes be down to eating too quickly, dusty hay or other irritants in the room. If you’re worried there is no harm in taking her to the vet for a check.

:wel:Please can you add your location to your profile. It makes it easier when giving out information and avoids the need to repeatedly ask you! And we have members from all over the world 😚 When you have a chance, we’d love to see photos of your girls.

The first port of call always need to be to see a vet check to rule out medical issues.

Guinea pigs have narrow airways and any hay dust or bedding dust can irritate them. You should also check that you don’t have any irritants in the room such as candles, perfumes or sprays, or that the air isn’t too dry caused by central heating, but you do always need to have medical issues checked and ruled out by a vet first. You should not give any medications unless a vet tells you to.
