Hi, my guinea pig Hetty started sneezing more than usual last night. Picked her up for cuddles and one of her nostrils was a little damp. Still eating and popcorning same as usual, perhaps drinking a little less but then the temp is cooler today so that could explain that. Just tracked her and she's sneezed 8 times in an hour. Have a beta appointment for 9:15 in the morning. Does this sound like it could be a URI? Panicking like mad. She's around 5 months old.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

hey, you have caught it early if it is something so good to get her checked out. It maybe the start of a uri if so some antibiotics should sort it out. sending healing vibes to Hetty, let us know how she gets on.

I got my little lady piggies from pets at home. And 6 days in Belle was super lethargic and had a runny nose. She had been sneezing since I got her but it got progressively worse. Took her to pets4vets and she was given antibiotics and antiinflammatory. She perked up a lot but continued to sneeze and at next vet check had lost weight so was given critical care and more metacalm. Back a week later and I was still concerned about the sneezing which was now a hacking couch but she had gained weight and was eating etc so vet swabbed her nose etc. Results in today that she still has a bacteria in her nose. Her nose has been on and off runny for a few days now. Sorry for the ramble lol my point was supposed to be that other than the initial vet visit when she was lethargic she has haired around my livingroom at great speed, had no issues with her appetite and popcorned and zoomied like a very happy little piggy. So your defs right to get her checked xx

Thanks for replying guys.

My vet on Wednesday morning prescribed her baytril. Her nose was running and she was sneezing but eating and active, after her fourth dose of baytril last night she just didn't move, wouldn't eat or anything, stayed up all night, managed to get her to eat hay and some cucumber. Back at vets this morning, I think she cannot tolerate the baytril, he said this was unlikely, however, I've read it's quite common? Anyway has changed antibiotic to pediatrix septrin, is this a lot safer? Very antibiotic paranoid now. Many thanks.

If you're unsure with antibiotics like Baytril, you can give your piggy probiotics about 1.5 hours after their antiobiotic. This helps settle their stomachs.

You've not stated where you are in your profile, I'm in the UK. We can either get it from our vet, or online from Amazon or somewhere. I get mine from a shop called Pets at Home. It's called Pro-C and comes in a yellow tub.

Septrin is fine to use for a URI, although it tends to not be quite as effective as Baytril. But, you shouldn't have as much problems with intolerance.

The last time I asked for an antibiotic of a URI I was given Sulphatrim. He needed a longer course than usual, about 21 days, but he was fine afterwards.

I was given Baytril when Toast has a URI and she was miserable on it, really drained her so it was changed to Sulfatrim with a probiotic around 2 hours after. The pro biotic was Fibreplex but I found it difficult to give so it was changed to Bio Lapis, which is a powder so it was easy to sprinkle over food. Toast tolerated the new AB much better, it wasn't as harsh as the Baytril.

After 2 weeks on Sulfatrim and probiotics Toast was rid of the URI.
