five days ago, i took my chonk of a boar (bowser) who has been suffering sneezing fits and a runny nose to the vet. a bacterial culture was taken from his nasal discharge and we started him on TMS + bene-bac. i just got confirmation that his particular strain of bacteria should be susceptible to the TMS, so he should have already shown some improvement, but he's still sneezing -- and at the end of his sneezing fits, he also seems to be choking. i called the vet again and was told he could be choking on excess mucus and that i should keep him on the meds and wipe his nose.

i was just wondering if anyone had similar experiences or had any advice/thoughts on how i could help bowser. i absolutely trust this vet (at 'the center for avian and exotic medicine' in nyc which specializes in birds and small mammals), but i hope everyone understands i am feeling very anxious for my baby b.

i am going to replace his hay with a new brand in case it's too dusty and contributing to the sneezing. otherwise, bowser is eating as usual with normal poops, and his best boar buddy is fine (the vet said since they've been together so long without goomba showing symptoms it's okay not to separate them).

ps - it was very strange to drop him off at the vet during these odd times! i hope everyone is staying safe.

When you say bacteria, what exactly was he diagnosed with? Was it a URI or something else? And what is the full name for the antibiotic (I assume that’s what TMS is)?

I’ll tag @Wiebke @VickiA @furryfriends (TEAS)

he was diagnosed with a URI, and the antibiotic is TMS which i think is commonly called bactrim (trimethoprim sulfa).

If he has only been on the antibiotic for five days, then that is not very long at all. You need to give it the entire course before being concerned that it hasn’t worked.

And yes, there is no need to separate him from his friend. His friend had already been exposed to any bacteria so separating would just cause stress to them both for no real benefit
