Hi all

Had Toffee Apple and Blackjack out today for 7-8 hours of floor time while we gave their cage a good clean out out.

We introdiced a new guinea pig cosy today and Toffee Apple seemed to love it even laying in it for quite some time, Blackjack didn't really go near it.

After they had burnt off alot of their energy we decided to put them back into their fresh cage, not before giving it a good check for smells and fumes to which me and my partner couldn't smell any. After Toffee Apple had been in for a few minutes he let out a really loud and squeaky sneeze. He then kept sneezing like made for about 15 minutes. We got him out of the cage and he seemed frightened and abit subdued. He stopped sneezing so we put him back and he went up to the veg bowl and finished out what was left and then went after hay. After this he just laid down and wasn't bothered, I put my hand in to pick him up and he put up no fight which is unusual as he doesn't like to be picked up. He was just kinda sleepy and not making any noise while we cuddled, again unusual as he is normally very chatty. We have called the out of hours vets and they think he could be starting with a respiratory infection. We have him set up in a clean cage with newspaper and some hay and dry food and a water bottle and we are going to monitor him over night till we can get him to the vets in the morning.

It rather sounds to me like some strong reaction to something that irritated his nose - it can just have been some dust or pollen that have come with the cosy.
However, because URI can be a killer and can in some cases get bad very quickly, any vet will treat for URI and ask to see a piggy promptly.

Maybe emonia!? I'm not sure if it is emonia or not but my guinea pig would always be sneezing then we found he had emonia.

My partner wondered if it was the cosy as it was a cheap one from eBay and Blackjack is fine and he didn't go near it

With a URI you would see a steady sneezing, not just one violent fit, and a gradual deterioration with crackly breathing, loss of appetite, yellow/thick crusty eyes and noses (not the clear crusts you get from dried irritation sneezing) etc.

If the sneezing has stopped and your boy is fine in himself, I would wait and see how he is tomorrow.

I would also recommend to give the cosy a wash; ideally you wash any bedding and soft furnishings for your piggies before you introduce them with their bedding. That makes it also smell more familiar and acceptance is higher.

Just thought I would give you all an update.

Got him into the vets this morning and she thinks it's not a full infection yet maybe the start of one and has given us antibiotics for him. He has had his first dose and he takes them like a champion. All being well he should get better soon
