Hi my guinea pigs name is Cali, I've had her for about a year now. She has always seemed to sneeze. I always thought she was just sneezing because of the hay. But with lap time and whilst she eats veggies she sneezes. I know sneezing is normal like every once or twice a day, but she seems to sneeze more. I know she is not sick because she has been doing this for months and otherwise she is very happy and healthy. She hasn't been to the vet because it is quite expensive. So I was wondering if anyone else has this same thing happen to their piggies, if they just sneeze more. I also have a lot of pets cats dogs etc, so idk if its just the hair and dandruff and dust in the air that could cause this?

Mine occasionally sneeze - especially if eating too fast but if Callie is persistent in her sneezing and you are concerned then a trip to the vet is called for.
We all know the cost of vet fees but they are part of the responsibility we take on with pets.
That’s why a vet fund is recommended.

Hay and house dust and pollen can cause sneezing when a bit gets into the nose (it takes some time to work it out of the nose again, that is what sneezing is for).
Dry air from radiators, air conditioning or desert climate is also harsh on the respiratory system.
Air fresheners, perfumed skin products, perfumed detergent, scent sticks, smoking etc. can also cause problems.

It is usually working out what the problem is by elimination. Hay dust is the largest culprit - be aware that a guinea having a dust problem is not just sneezing when eating hay, but some time after.

PS: Please save up for a vet visit as part of the weekly maintenance cost. Emergencies and illness never happen at a good time, and you can lose vital time to get your vet together. Vet cost is going to make the largest budget post in any pet's life. It is an integral part of the responsibility you take on when you look after a life that is completely reliant on you.

Hi thank you guys for the reply. I have monitored her a lot more closely, and I being a first time piggy mama, I think I just panicked. She only sneezes a couple times a day if she does. I understand the importance of the vet, we have money aside for that. Thank you all : )

I have one that did too. I switched hay and got an air purifier. The vet tried antibiotics. I finally got rid if bedding and he hardly sneezes anymore. Hope you get it figured out.
