Hi guys, i recently adopted my guineas 5 days ago and noticed that chewwie was sneezing straight away. I woke up the next morning and he had a runny nose so i went to the vet that day and she told me he had no breathing or chest problems, and gave me baytril to see if it goes away. Its day three on the antibiotics and he is still sneezing and stuffy nosed. He is pooping and eating and drinking fine and is running around happily at floor time. She didnt mention it being a URI but I'm not sure what else it could be? Does that sound like an URI to any of you? Ive also read such sad things about URIs killing lovely guineas and I'm terrified that might happen to chewwie. If anyone things there may be an alternative to a URI please let me know because i am so worried!
Thanks guys!

Hi and welcome!

Could you please check your environment for factors that could irritate his breathing?
- hay dust and pollen
- air fresheners, scent sticks, cigarette smoke, dry room air, perfumes/perfumed care products
- what bedding are you using?

As we have members and enquiries from all over the world, we find it very helpful if you please added your country, state/province or UK county to your details so can tailor any advice to what is available and possible where you are straight away. Thank you!

Hi,
Ive put my location on my profile, not sure where else i put it?
I havent used scent sticks since ive got them but have done in the past, also I'm only using hay and newspaper atm as i cut out wood shavings due to research!
Thanks :)

My boy piggie is allergic to pretty much everything! I think this is quite rare! I now make sure the fleece is washed with non bio washing powder and I also spritz the hay with water before putting it in the hutch. If he still sneezes after this I also freeze the hay before giving it to him ( this works a treat but does take quite a bit of time) I also make sure that the hay is in a box and is separate from where he sleeps. You could also do a steam bath with vix and put the bowl next to the hutch this also works. Hope that helps x

I had a piggie that used to sneeze all the time and the metacan cleared it. But unfortunately had other issues such as bloat and lost her last week :(

I would suggest freeze hay.

Give it another few more days and if doesn't clear up take him back the vets x

He's still on them but really coming near the end now. He's much better, putting weight on and much more active. Just still a bit of a snotty nose though!
