I posted a while back about My Boy buddy sneezing and sounding like he is stuffy, I took him the the Vet and the Vet said his Ears looked fine, he checked his breathing and said he did not hear anything in His lungs, He game him Medicine that i gave twice a day for 10 days (had a couple extra days worth, think a total of 12) He is still sneezing after that, He acts fine, eats drinks, poops and pees, none of his habits of changed, He has been like this now for maybe 4 months..

He is on Towels and has the Carefresh bedding, Nothing has changed that I can think of..

does anyone have any other ideas?

Out of interest is he only sneezing when your holding him, or is he perhaps sneezing after you've cleaned his hutch out or is it just randomly?

Also when he sneezes, the stuff that comes out is it clear or white\creamy coloured?

it is random. does not matter where he is at..

Still having the problem anymore advice, Been to vet 3 times, 2 different Meds.. Vet said Xrays woudl have to be next and I do not have the money for them at all.. He acts fine eats, poops pees everything 100% normal, but sneezes a lot and you can hear it like when we have a cold we breathe funny sometimes.. Stuff does come out of his nose and sometimes we have seen it where a bubble forms out of his nose, like a snot bubble, if you get what I'm saying, Please help

What colour is the fluid coming out of his nose? Clear, white, yellow, green?
How old is he?
What medicine was given..and was it given by syringe feeding him?
Has he been losing weight? (Might be worth weighing him every couple of days at the moment)

There are several possibilities and ufortunately your vet will have to rule each one out:

It sounds like there is a fluid build-up somewhere in his respiratory system because you can see fluid/bubbles coming out of his nose..this could be indicative of
a) an allergy to something -one of my pigs is allergic to fabric conditioner and starts sneezing and wheezing after a few days exposure.....once it;s removed he goes back to normal. Is there anything you can think of that might be causing the sneezing in the environment (eg scented candles, room sprays, washing powder, type of hay?)
b) chronic pneumonia from an infection (yet the vet said his lungs sounded clear?)
c) heart porblems .

Apart from reducing exposure to any potential causes of an allergy and monitoring him for a week, the next step really is an x ray to determine if there is any fluid in his lungs and/or whether his heart is enlarged (and becuase fluid is coming out of his nose then you cant; afford to delay too long)

Thanks for the reply with all the info, I will answer best I can..

the Fluid is White/yellow. He is about a year old now, give or take a couple months...
The first Medication was Baytril, Injected in mouth
The Second Medication was Doxycycline which was also injection in mouth

He has not lost any weight, in fact gained some from the first med and second med visits, hes a fatty lol.

I have changed Detergents, but honestly cant say if he did that before the switch or not? :( I will get a different kind and only wash their towels in it, ( a smaller bottle)

They have been on towels and the Carefresh bedding for a long time before He got that way so I'm pretty sure its not the bedding..

Only other thing I switched was going from Timothy Hay to Orchard Grass.. He deffiently was not having any fluids out of his nose while on timothy Hay but cant say for certain that is the issue either, I can get a smaller Bag of Timothy Hay and go back to that as well to try...

Yes Vet said lungs sounded great and heat as well..... I will change detergent and Hay, Does anyone have a good detergent that shouldnt be known to cause any issues? Lol that might be a hard question..

THANKS!

One of piggies i think is allergic to carefresh bedding. She sneezed all the time in her old cage.

My pigs aren't allergic to "all free and clear"
I wash my pigs towels, fleece, etc in All Free and Clear with some Baking Soda.

they hve been on the carefresh bedding for a long time with no issues...

Is he old?
Could it be that he is allergic to the bedding?
Have you changed his food recently?
Have you done anything that could of shocked him as in put him in a different environment?

hes a lil over a year I would say now..

dont think its the bedding because they have been around/in that long before he started sneezing.. Food has not been changed same food since day one. nothing new that i can think of that shocked him.. Only thing was went from Timothy hay to Orchard Grass and a new detergant, But I am going to change detergants and hay tonight and test...

I switched laundry detergants today and hay is tommorow...

I'm hoping one of our more experienced peeps will answer this for you............... it is a worry i'm sorry :(
Good idea to change the washing detergent.......... it might have been a bit too scented ?
Maybe give your hay a good shake before popping into his cage :)
All paws crossed you can figure out what's up XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

This is just my opinion, I haven;t seen your piggie and I'm not a vet (but I am a microbiologist) so I am happy if you want to print out this post together with my other post and discuss the points I have raised with your vet

My concern is the fact that the snot is described as yellow as opposed to clear, in colour indicating there could be some type of bacterial infection present. An allergy would normally show as clear/white snot....unless it has been going on for some time and an infection has lodged at the site of inflamed tissue. I would however have expected the antibioics he's already received to have sorted this and the snot not to be yellow. So I'm basing the rest of this post on the fact his snot is yellow..

One thing that springs to mind is that it is possible he may have something ( e.g. hay seed) lodged in his nasal passage that has caused some inflammation/infection/irritation. The other is that there is a hidden abcess somewhere that the antibioitics so far have not been able to touch. Has the vet examined the lymph nodes in hs neck etc for swelling? (we call this palpating)

In this situation, if your current steps of changing the hay etc makes no difference, I think I would consider the following as next steps:

a) if not already done, full physical examination of lymph nodes
b) X ray - this can check for foreign bodies, teeth root issues, heart issues and might also help in pointing towards any abcesses (although Xray might not show them up)
c) microbial culture of nasal secretions to test for harmful bugs/antibioitic sensitivity.

It will cost money, but if the vet agrees that these are the next steps, I would get all done at the same time because then you should get enough information to be able to determine possible case and suitable treatment and it reduces the number of vet visits for procedures and therefore stress for your piggie. If you opt for one and it comes back inconclusive, then your next step would be to have the other ones done

if results to the above indicate there is an infection present it might be worth trying the antibiotic azithromycin as this has been found to work well with deep seated abcessess/stubborn infections (providing the culture comes back showing sensitivity to this antibiotic)

I do hope you and your vet can get to the bottom of this
