Hi,

A few weeks a go I noticed Cookie (aged almost 5) snorting whilst eating his vegetables, the noise only starts when his been eating them for a while. The rasping became more frequent, like the sound of a URI, so put him on Baytril and it went for a week or so. Now its come back, mainly when he eats again, he seems fine within himself, good appetite and he comes out for his food as normal, although I know they can hide illness well. I have listened to his chest and I cant hear any clicking, his breathing seems a bit heavy, not sure if I'm just being a bit paranoid lol.
I have booked him a vets appointment for Tuesday morning, just wondering if anyone else has experienced this? I've had guineas with URI before and its constant rasping and snorting but this is odd because its only when his eating.

Thanks,
Amy

I would ask the vet to check for fluid on his lungs in case but am thinking it is more a nasal issue. You could ask about Bisolvon which can help clear mucous in the nasal passages.

Are his veggies usually quite wet? he could be inhaling water as he eats?

I agree with Helen, I have one that snorts up the water on the veggies, I solved it by scattering the veggies instead of putting them in a bowl.

Yes I will mention a possible URI. Not really wet, today he had parsley and carrot and was snorting. I caught he snorting whilst eating pellets the other day too
