Snowflake Softchip Contamination?

Hello,
I'm new to posting to the forum, but have read lots of great advice here - thank you. I'm hoping to hear from cavie owners who use snowflake soft chip to see if my experience so far is usual or not.

I recently started buying snowflake soft chip for my two cavies. The first time I bought a small bag from an equine supplier - they split bales at the shop for their small animal section. I was disappointed to find that the bag contained lots of coloured (plastic?) fibres, as though plastic sacking material had been shredded along with the wood. I thought it strange, but put it down to the fact that the bale had been split by the shop. I then bought a bale of snowflake soft chip and was surprised to find the same thing - shreds of coloured plastic fibres, some small shreds of what looked like painted wood, and also some clear soft plastic - packaging of some sort.
So, is this usual, or have I been unlucky to find a batch that has problems? I'm reluctant to buy another bale at the moment.
 
ive just bought a bale,ive not opened ii yet,i use fitch.megasorb and aubiose mainly.use fleece inside the cages in the house.ive used softchip previously,but not noted any plastic in this.the packaging is flimsy and tears very easily.i would take your bale back to your supplier,and explain the problem.you could also contact the company on line and explain your findings.it is under pelvin products.thanks for informing the forum.xx
 
Welcome to the forum, sorry I have never used snowflake. Will try and find some members who have and tag them in for you
 
I do notice bits of plastic from time to time, I just pick them out, I don't let it detract from an otherwise excellent product. ;)
 
Okay - thanks all for your replies. I have been picking out the bits as I come across them, but it's less than ideal. I'll finish this bale and then try something else, I think - plenty of options to choose from. Bit annoying, though, as I was happy with it otherwise.
 
I thought I would try this but I had to throw it out. I brought it inside as my piggies are indoor one and the musty smell filled up my home. It was too heavy for me to carry the whole bag down to the bin so I had to empty into separate bin bags to get rid of it. It was damp and there was a hole in the bag at the bottom but I think that was recent on taking it out of the delivery van as it didn't feel like dampness had got in through that hole. I didn't notice any other material in there. I haven't bought it again.

I use it for the rabbits, never had a problem with it.
